Would Lowell miss Green Monster?

Mike Lowell's production was dramatically better at Fenway Park (.373 batting average 14 homers, 73 RBIs) than on the road (.276, seven homers, 47 RBIs). An NL executive said that is because Lowell's swing is tailored for the Green Monster and that teams with home stadiums that have deep left-field fences (such as the Yankees) should be leery of bringing in the free-agent third baseman. "Lowell is not a tape-measure home run guy," the executive said. "He is a pull guy. I would wonder about him in Yankee Stadium." Lowell has three homers in 90 career at-bats at Yankee Stadium.

That sounds reasonable at first, but the final stat proves the fallacy.

This year--a great year for Lowell--he hit 21 HRs in 593 ABs, which means he hit a HR in 3.5% of his ABs. But 3 career HRs in 90 ABs at Yankee Stadium is a HR 3.3% of the time. Or put it this way...if he had ONE more career homer at Yankee stadium, it would actually be a better percentage than he had all year. And that would make the Yankees "leery"...?

Sometimes writers should actually read what they write, huh?

Say what you will, and I think Lowell is a very good hitter and fielder, I think he loses some numbers if he leaves Fenway.

November 6, 2007  10:00 AM ET

The answer is...Yes.
So what? He can still play.

November 6, 2007  10:15 AM ET

Agree 100%, fellas. ANY right-handed hitter would lose some stats if he leaves Fenway. But my point was that he's not a Fenway-only type of HR hitter, and you don't sign him for HRs anyway.

But I'd be surprised if he left Boston.

It's just another myth that gets passed along so much it hardens into fact. Like the "short right porch" in the Bronx. Which is only about 6-10 feet shorter than the "deep fence" in left.

If Aaron Boone can hit it into the loge in left, Mike Lowell can hit it over the fence. Just like he has, about 3.3% of the time.

Just what the Yankees need-another over 30 player. The only chance the Yankees have of catching Red Sox Nation is to keep getting younger and getting rid of old dead wood like Giambi. The Yankees need starting pitching, and besides, they once had Lowell and traded him to the Marlins. My prediction? Epstein will not allow Lowell to go to the Yankees and will re-sign him. Lowell knows he's a Fenway type hitter, and hitting behind Ortiz and Ramirez ain't a bad thing. Who would hit in front of him in NY, now that A-Rod is gone, that could match the two in Beantown?

November 6, 2007  10:47 AM ET

Lowell would be a great addition, he is NOT a Fenway-type of hitter (because there's really no such thing), and the Red Sox will try hard to keep him, and probably succeed.

November 6, 2007  11:10 AM ET

The Green Monster makes everyone look better than they really are..that peice of junk is what 15 feet from the plate?

November 6, 2007  11:16 AM ET

Fenway is a right-hand hitters' park more than a left-handers'. No doubt.

But again, look at Lowell's 21 HRs this year. He hit 14 at Fenway, where he plays half his games. He hit seven on the road, where presumably he plays half his games at right-handed parks, and half at left-handed parks.

So 14 at home and 7 on the road is EXACTLY what you'd expect any right-handed pull hitter to hit if his home field favors his side of the plate. Has nothing to do with the Green Monster.

November 6, 2007  11:25 AM ET

BTW...

2007 was the 6th year that Lowell has hit more than 20 HRs.
It was the 7th year that he's hit more than 30 doubles.
It was the 3rd year that he's hit more than 100 RBIs, but the 5th year he's hit more than 90.

So can we please get off this "Fenway-type-of-hitter" crap now? Thanks.

November 6, 2007  11:29 AM ET

Who cares if he is a "Fenway type hitter" or not. He'll be playing his home games there for the next 3-5 years, so it's all the better.

November 6, 2007  11:35 AM ET

I haven't been checking any items on line today, hyper. You know something I don't?
(I haven't even checked the other online editions of the papers, yet. I need a break.)

November 6, 2007  11:36 AM ET

hyper, I agree. I'm sure the Sox will do their best to keep him.

This was all a reaction to the post, which suggested that he's only good at Fenway. I'm pointing out what BS that is. I think every righty at Fenway gets the knee jerk "Fenway-type-of-hitter" label, and the numbers just don't bear it out. He's a good hitter wherever he goes.

November 6, 2007  11:41 AM ET

No news, yet, 4192. Just making a prediction. I was right about Schilling (down to the dollar figure, in fact). :)

And I hear ya, Yankee64. And I agree.

November 6, 2007  11:42 AM ET

What's wrong with you two? Acting all nice and civilized? It's scarey!

November 6, 2007  11:51 AM ET

Hey...I'm a lover, not a hater. I don't talk trash unless someone REALLY deserves it. And rooting for your team is not a trash-able offense.

November 6, 2007  11:57 AM ET

Exactly, Yankee64. I have no hate for Yankee fans by default.

Kumbaya, my Lord, Kumbaya...

It's funny how civil people act in the baseball forums as compared to the football ones. I love it.
