Reid: McNabb won't be benched

Ealges coach Andy Reid said yesterday that he has no plans to make a quarterback switch on the heels of a lopsided loss at home to the Cowboys dropped the Eagles to 3-5. Still, people around the league continue to wonder privately if Reid will keep coaching beyond this season, and his players have had to field questions in recent days about whether Reid's family problems have distracted him. In Philadelphia, Reid's job status has made its way from the sports page to the front page and even the editorial page.

It's sad, but few athletes can stay on top for their career. McNabb isn't getting it done, they won't make the playoffs, and they need to see if Kolb is the guy of the future.

Reid won't bench him, but I question his decision making skills in light of current events.

This article is crazy, starts off talking about Mcnabb being benched then moves to Reids family problems. Donovan didn't play great but you can't put this loss on him. The whole team didn't show up, and they have got to get him some help if they plan on keeping him next year.

I like the Eagles but this team is a wreck. Time to start planning for next year.

As a Donovan McNabb fan, it pains me to say this but he needs to have a seat. His play was nothing short of atrocious Sunday night. The interception he threw into triple coverage right before halftime was not something you should never see from an eight-year veteran of the game. I don't know if it's the knee, poor reading of the position of the strong safety or simple desperation but Donovan McNabb is not playing at the required level for an NFL QB.

They just aren't very good overall.

November 6, 2007  07:49 AM ET

Totally agree with keepinitreeuh (weird name). McNabb needs to move to a new team/scheme. Reid's personal life is dont help this team's persona - scrap heap and start over Eagles.

its amazing how many media types will jump down a player's or coach's throat the instant they sense weakness. they see the state of affairs in Philly, and just attack, like a pack of wild dogs or something. The Eagles need help, in a bad way. They have to do something about the O-Line, their receivers, and the defence in general. They are getting older without finding any young pieces to fit in the puzzle. McNabb just doesn't have the personnel around him to perform that well, and, well, the expectations of him may be too high as well. This team is terribly put together, and the rest of the stuff is just the icing on the cake.

November 6, 2007  08:07 AM ET

I think giving up on McNabb is premature. He still has the skills to exceed in this league, but The Eagles need to adapt to the team and their strengths. Why we continue to work on long passes so much with Donnovan being so inaccurate, and our receiving corps being so lack luster is beyond me.

Listen up Andy and take a page from the Packers game plan. Start going to short controlled passes and bring in a hammer runner to give power to our ground game. Take some of the heat of McNabb who is having to scramble all the time to buy time.

And then, while your at it, kick your two sons out on the street and tell them that if they need to run drugs, run some roids and GHG over to the team so that they can stop getting manhandled all the time at the line.

November 6, 2007  08:08 AM ET

Brian Westbrook. They have no WR's so he should atleast get the ball 20-25 times a game. He's their only real threat on offense and they're not even using him right. Last yr. when McNabb went down they started running the ball, not they seem to forget how to run...

November 6, 2007  08:10 AM ET

if you think the team is a wreck this season, just wait until they drop mcnabb

November 6, 2007  08:13 AM ET

He's been overrated for years anyway. Look at this stats against good teams, they are awful. The only reason they won all those NFC east titles is because the East was horrbile back then. Now that the Giants, Boys and even the Skins are good, they can't compete. I don't understand why no one sees that.

November 6, 2007  08:17 AM ET

Westbrook has been the only good player on the Eagles for awhile now. McNabb is holding the team back. They never should have traded Jeff Garcia.

November 6, 2007  08:49 AM ET

I have two boys, I like many of you hope we have done the best we can to raise them to make the right decisions when they turn 18. But after that, they are adults and like Reids sons if they make the wrong ones must pay for them. Why then is Reid such a bad father? Focus on the field not the home.

Eagles without a doubt need to rebuild, and not be afraid to give time to Kolb.

November 6, 2007  08:53 AM ET

Eagles are done for, however they should continue w/mcnabb as the qb until they are completely out of the playoff race.

November 6, 2007  08:58 AM ET

He is still a good QB. The entire team has isues... Give the coach a break about his sons. They are grown men who made their own stupid choice.. move on.

November 6, 2007  09:01 AM ET

The Eagles had thier time. It will be the Cowboys and Giants that are on top for a while.

I look forward to the Cowboys vs. Giants game. I can't wait until they put all those DE's in and Marion Barber runs right through everyone.

CB Newman and Henry will be playing together almost healthy for the first time this season. Tank Johnson will be rotating in and WR Terry Glenn is about 2 or 3 weeks away from returning. Life is looking good for the Cowboys.

November 6, 2007  09:09 AM ET

It would be insane for the Eagles to bench McNabb. First of all, he's only part of the problem. To me the majority of the blame should be on the coaches. Jim Johnson's once feared defense is now not very good anymore. They barely have one pass rusher on the line, which ends up exposing the secondary a little. It doesn't matter what CB is covering a receiver with enough time any WR will get loose (for proof of this watch the Phi/Dallas game where McNabb held the ball for 14 seconds and threw it to the slowest receiver in the NFL Freddie Mitchell). There are also real problems with the offensive play-calling. To make matters worse what would putting Kolb in do other than get him killed? They should give 5 one more year after this one. Look at Culpepper, after his knee got rebuilt it took a year for him to make progress and he's not looking too bad (it's hard to tell with a Raiders team), if they let him go this year I guarantee he'll go to another team and play well.

Lastly, the whole thing about his sons is really insensitive to bring up. Yeah his family has problems, but if your family had problems would you just quit your job and go live in a hole? I think if it was such a distraction Reid would have the courtesy and intelligence to step aside. Let the man have his private life.

No one is denying that you can't control your kids forever. But the fact is, is that Reids two kids are still living at HIS house. The "drug emporium" as the judge called it, is owned by Andy Reid and his wife. If your not going to take responsibility for your two miscreant kids, then you have to at least take responsibility for what goes on in the house you own.

We were ready to hang Michael Vick on that same premise even before we knew the extent of his involvement in the dog fighting. And what type of hypocrisy is this. The drugs were found in Andy Reids home...but we aren't going to hold him accountable at all, or assume that he didn't know anything at all about the drugs?

At least Michael Vick could say that his house which was used for dog fighting wasn't his primary state of residence. Andy Reid LIVES in the home with all these drugs. And I say this NOT as a Michael Vick defender because the **** got what he deserved. But guess what? Andy Reid needs to be looked into because at best, he is extremely naive. At worst, Andy Reid and his wife simply didn't care and were complicit in the acts of these two "men" they had living in their homes.

November 6, 2007  09:41 AM ET

I don't care what the NFL says. If a player's home was found with drugs in it, they would look into it. These kids/men were selling and using drugs in the house. This is a family matter, but if you don't know that your kids are in your house selling and using drugs you need to be home more. The Eagles season is just about done. Why not take a leave of absence for the rest of the year and get your family situation together? Anytime you have two sons going to jail, there is something wrong in your household.
