Why Rockies won't trade Atkins

You can knock Garrett Atkins off the Yankees' wish list to replace Alex Rodriguez at third base. The Rockies are adamant they are keeping Atkins. The biggest reason Colorado is not open to dealing Atkins is, ironically, because of Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras, who also represents the Rockies' best hitter, Matt Holliday. Colorado will make inquiries later this offseason into signing the left fielder to a long-term deal. But the Rockies know the history of Boras' top clients is to test the free-agent market, and Holliday is two seasons away from doing that.

One last opportunity to be the first to say, "Kiss Off."

Why on God's earth would the Rockies trade Atkins? Again, I've said it before, this thread was originated by the NY Post, a pseudo tabloid newspaper with NO credibility.

That's a picture of Brad Hawpe, not Garrett Atkins

'Why on God's earth would the Rockies trade Atkins? '

The reason the Rockies would consider moving Atkins is cause they have a GREAT young player named Ian Stewart ready to take over 3B...and he'd be a cheaper fit...if they could get a quality arm for Atkins, and put Stewart at 3B, that's a good move for them...

Can't keep Stewart in AAA

November 6, 2007  12:58 PM ET

JimL,

Why not move Atkins to the of? Triple A phenoms often fail; I'd have to see Ian Stewart do it first. As for trading Atkins for a quality arm, how do you know that quality arm will flourish at Denver's altitude? Remember Mike Hampton? I'd rather keep a home grown, proven player and sign a free agent. Any pitcher would be a risk in Colorado until he proves he can pitch at high altitudes.

Where in the OF do you put Atkins...Holliday is in LF and Hawpe is in RF...Atkins isn't fast enough to play CF...and that's a spacious OF...it's why the ygot the speedster Taveras to roam out there...

I'm a fan of Atkins, but with a team like Colorado, that doesn't have the resources of other teams, they need to move players like Atkins when they have cheaper alternatives ready to play (especially when the player coming up has great skills like Stewart). The money saved will be better served signing Holliday to a multiyear deal...

Colorado had the lowest ERA in the NL in the 2nd half...even though they playing half their games in Colorado, and it's not like they're a team of aces. Getting another SP who induces a lot of ground balls would be just the thing they need...especially with the D they have their.

Here's another thought...Move Helton's big contract somewhere else and put Atkins at 1B...

November 6, 2007  01:43 PM ET

what's great is that is a picture of brad hawpe not garret atkins. Brilliant!!! I am not even a Rockies fan and I noticed this. C'mon AP

November 6, 2007  01:44 PM ET

dmbfan,

They do that all the time here...it's ridiculous...

November 6, 2007  01:52 PM ET

Let's see. In 2 years Holliday will be a free agent. Manny is signed through 2008 with club options for '09 and '10.

I could see Holliday going to the Sox after 2009.

November 6, 2007  01:54 PM ET

No way Colorado loses Holliday...they'll resign him. He is the reason they put butts in the seats...

November 6, 2007  01:58 PM ET

Who knows, Jim. He'll be very expensive. Should be interesting.

November 6, 2007  02:03 PM ET

Anything can happen, but it's very unlikely...VERY unlikely...

November 6, 2007  02:11 PM ET

For the sake of discussion, why is it so unlikey? Because he is the Rockies' best player? Because he puts butts in the seats? The same can be said for Santana and he's likely to be moved because the Twins can't afford him. Same can be said for Willis and/or Miggy and they're likely to be moved since the Marlins can't afford them. That's just the cruel reality of small market teams and superstars. I don't see why the Rockies and Holliday are any different.

November 6, 2007  02:18 PM ET

The Twins have already shown they don't care about losing the faces of the franchise or they would have made sure they signed Hunter...he is the face of the franchise...plus Santana and Hunter were very critical of the dumb moves of management the last couple of years and the Twins have Mauer, the golden Minnesota Boy and Morneau to fill the seats...

The difference can be summed up in the owners...Pohland is all about the buck...he's already shown he could care less about the fans wishes...he volunteered his team up for contraction...Colorado, however, begged for a franchise and finally got it...they aren't gonna risk losing fans by getting rid of their best player...their only problem is that Boras is Holliday's agent, but still, I'm 99% sure Holliday doesn't leave Colorado...they'll sign him to a big contract, probably this offseason...

November 6, 2007  02:25 PM ET

Yeah, that makes sense, Jim. For the Sox's sake, here's hoping you're wrong. :)

November 6, 2007  02:36 PM ET

You guys can dream...and what a good dream it would be for you guys cause the guy is a stud player...you guys can definately afford him, that's for sure...

November 6, 2007  04:28 PM ET

move helton he didnt do much and atkins can play 1st.

November 6, 2007  04:40 PM ET

Helton would be good in NY.

November 6, 2007  04:53 PM ET

'move helton he didnt do much and atkins can play 1st.'

Helton hit for a high average and played Gold Glove caliber defense...he had a better OBP, Slg % and, of course, a better OPS than Atkins...he's not the power hitter he once was but I wouldn't go so far as to say he didn't do much....

Still, like I said before, moving him to first and trading Helton would be a good move to free up money for the younger star...Holliday
