08:19 AM ET 02.03 | Though he'd still like to play in the majors, Jermaine Dye may be headed to retirement. "I will continue to stay in shape and hopefully someone will call. If nothing gets done by the end of the spring, I may call it a career." Dye said he spoke with the Dodgers in December about setting up a workout, but never heard back from the club. The hang-up, according to both Dye and Dodgers officials, was Dye's desire for a major league contract. The Dodgers were willing to make Dye only a minor league offer, and ended up signing another right-handed hitter, Marcus Thames, to a one-year, $1 million major league deal. ... "I feel I can contribute to a team in a big way," Dye said. "I guess I'm just shocked that nobody has called."

It was more surprising that he didn't latch on with a team last year, after hitting 27 HR's in "09".

nobody wants you...just retire and call it a career Jermaine

He turned down something like $3.5 million because it was beneath him, then somebody cried racism, I forget who, maybe Sheffield. It's not racism, it's called getting old and being a DH, not much value there in today's MLB landscape, look around Jermaine.

Foxsports needs to remember the basic journalistic fundamentals of who, what, when, where etc. Don't you think it would have been a nice idea to include his age somewhere in that article?

There were a lot of players that were shocked that they made 15 million or so one year then the next were only offered 3 to 5 mil. They probably thought that the big pay days would go on forever.

I'm shocked that J Lo hasn't called me. I mean... who is this Marc Anthony dude?? what does he have that I don't have (other than fame, fortune, and better looks)?

February 3, 2011  09:53 AM ET

I thought some one would pick him up last year also. He can not play everyday and be effective. He can still run way better than Thome and still play some outfield, but as a backup only. If he wants starting time, then it is over for him.He is not a dug out cancer either, just too quiet.

February 3, 2011  09:54 AM ET

The Cubs offered him 3.5 million before last season to serve as a 4th OF and back-up 1st baseman, a role that eventually went to Xavier Nady. I was shocked he turned it down, considering he would have played a lot with Soriano and Fukudome being the main corner outfielders going into the year.

I'm sure there are still a few HRs in his bat....but his agent should try Japan, he could made some good loot and squeeze two or three more seasons there if he does well the first one.

he could always play in the independant league and prove he can play there, someone would pick him up mid season, but that would be beneath his millionair-ocity. Self important people...
