Papelbon sees writing on the wall

08:13 AM ET 02.08 | Jonathan Papelbon understands that the $12 million contract and the less expensive options make for interesting math in the Red Sox bullpen. "I realize the possibilities that could and could not happen, and I accept them and I move on. I'll go out and try and win a championship." ... Papelbon thinks he's going to have to adjust his approach to hitters, who in 2010 had the upper hand in that eternal cat-and-mouse game between pitcher and batsman. "You'll see a difference right off the bat," he said. "I will be throwing a lot more off-speed. I'll be throwing my split a lot more, my slider, I'll be throwing a heck of a lot more."

I hope Paps is with the team all summer...that would likely mean that the team is doing great, and that he is doing a fine job as closer.

Papelbon did ok last year but had too many blown saves...He got stubborn and kept going at them with his fastball, normally his best pitch. But he started missing with it, and thus the trouble. I didn't know his pay was at $ 12 mil so yes he now may have to be concerned about moving on. His approach may be better with changing speeds, etc. But if it makes him throw more pitches, to get an out, may be counterproductive. Makes one continue to appreciate guys that are very efficient getting outs. Velocity, movement and command. What more can anyone else need as a closer, besides being a cool customer..I got just two words to answer this....Mariano Rivera.

If he went to the Yankees, they'd be paying their bullpen more than some teams pay their entire team

I thought the plan was to get back to basics and stop throwing all kinds of pitches that batters can catch up to. If the writing wasn't on the wall before, it certainly is now.

Papelbon probably has lots of things written on his wall:
"helter skelter"
"Monkey talk small"
"Toejam football"

The operative word in that post is "blowing."

The Red Sox gave JD Drew , a career .280 hitter, $70 million. What is the big deal about giving $12 million to Papelbon ? At least he shows up.

i'm buried in quarterly reporting duties right now...so my reasons for being scarce this morning are quite legitimate...didn't you resurrect about 2000 years ago, by the way??

Depends who you ask.

Yup, he shows up alright...then walks a batter or two, gives up a hit or two, and maybe saves the game...maybe not. If you look at his numbers in a vacuum, they aren't bad at all, but if you're watching every game, his saves are more often of the heart-attack variety than the one-two-three, rocking chair variety.
As for his pay...the dude thinks he's Rivera #2, and should be paid that way. Sorry Paps...not even close.
