Sox fears: Pedroia injury mirrors Grant Hill's

08:16 AM ET 02.09 | References to Yao Ming and Grant Hill are not great to hear from Dustin Pedroia. The Red Sox' essential second baseman admitted in an interview with WEEI recently that his recovery from a broken left foot that limited him to just 75 games last season didn't go as smoothly as he'd hoped and that there had been "some surprises." In referencing his recovery, he cited Hill and Yao, two NBA stars whose careers were significantly altered by a similar injury, and noted that his injury is unusual because it was not a stress fracture but one caused by impact. Of course, playing second base isn't as physically taxing as running up and down an NBA court for 48 minutes, but to hear the usually brash Pedroia speaking cautiously about his recovery is more than enough reason for fans to be cautious, too.

The SOx have a great system and will replace him easily. Too bad. He is a great talent.

I'm sure there will be some anxiety in Red Sox nation when spring training gets under way.

So what are they saying, Dustin won't be able to dunk a basketball anymore???

If there is any question about letting the foot heal longer, the Sox should sit him and play Scutaro at 2nd base and Lowrie at SS. I'd rather see him heal up and come back strong for the second half than completely wreck the foot before the All Star break and leave them scrambling as the playoffs approach.

Howdy Clem. I've been impressed with Alacran's improvement in his English writing skills lately. His knowledge of baseball is still weak, but at least I can now tell that the gibberish is supposed to be our language.

Total agreement, Rex....his bat, his glove and his spirit are important for any stretch run.

Totally agree, in the 40 years I've been watching that team, he's the best 2B that I've ever seen them have. You just can't replace that.

You make a good point. I rarely have to refer to my alacran -to-english dictionary any more.

Jerry Remy was pretty good for while there as well, but he didn't have Pedroia's power.
