Strasburg on track for mid-September return

08:20 AM ET 02.11 | Stephen Strasburg took a small but significant step toward a return by throwing a ball Thursday. While recovery time varies from pitcher to pitcher, Zimmermann's experience sheds some light on when Strasburg may make his next major league appearance. The Nationals treated Zimmermann with extreme caution, and he made his first post-surgery appearance in the majors Aug. 26 last year, about 121/2 months following his August 2009 surgery. Since Strasburg underwent his surgery Sept. 3, he could feasibly return in the middle of September, at the very end of this season.

I truly hope that he makes a full recovery. The Nationals need him, and baseball needs him. If healthy, Strasburg and the Nationals have something good going.

I just hope they don't rush him along. There's certainly no reason to.

I hope this guy comes back. He was impressive and a good sale item to see the Senators

If he's back pitching meaningless games in September, Washington should have their franchise disbanded. 3rd place team at best this year and just as likely to be last.

Can't see Washington being in the mix for anything so no sense of rushing him.

i hope he does come back, but i agree with the rest of you, they dont need to rush him back at all. the nats wont contend this year and waiting until next year to starthim out with a minor league assignment to start next season will go a long way in making sure he is 100% before he gets back to the bigs. he has major league stuff and throws hard, but a franchise player like this can get hurt if treated wrong. zimmermans performance will say a lot about how good the franchise is with this situation

They need to bring this kid back very slowly and have him working on mechanics with their pitching coach the whole way. This guy excited everyone when he came out of college and he didn't disappoint when he made it to the big show. He is a special talent that will wind up like Prior or Wood if they don't take it slow. I am in no way a Nationals fan, and I'm not saying that I agree with some of the moves they've made this off season; i.e. grossly overpaying for Jason Werth. But if I were a Nationals fan, I would be excited that they are making moves at all and are trying to be competitive. Strasburg could have a great career for a franchise that is making some moves and could surprise a lot of you in the futrue, if they bring him back slowly.

Put him in the bullpen. Teach him to throw 95-97 instead of 99-101. Let him work for a while at a slow pace and grow. He needs a few years of solid bullpen innings to get a chance to start again. Or, you know, put him back in there in Sept this year and blow that arm up again. Whatever works!

Why? If he is ready by mid-September, why not keep him out until Winter leagues and let him get 5 - 10 starts there and be completely ready for 2012. Makes no sense to me.

No way in hell he returns to make 2-3 starts. What's the point? They are going to be very very very careful. He won't pitch until maybe a fall league (and I doubt that). It's more likely that he'll throw his first pitch in Spring Training 2012.

It's great to see pitchers like him on the mound. There are so many teams these days that the talent is watered down. We need new Nolan Ryans in the game and Stephen Strasburg definitely has the right stuff. There is NO limit what he can do if he can stay healthy. I believe there are too many know it all's training these kids today. In my days we never had these type of injuries. But with the weight training they seem to be getting major injuries more often. Good luck to him and best wishes to Stephen Strasburg.

I can understand your point, but there is value. Tim Hudson came back for the last month, or so, in 2009. It was enough to know that he was regaining his form and the Braves could mark his name into the rotation for the next year. In addition, the Braves signed him to a three year contract, which is now a huge bargain.

I really don't understand this obsession with hard-throwers. By definition, hard-throwers tend to blow their arms or gradually lose velocity and effectiveness by the time they finally figure out how to pitch. Why not invest on guys like Maddux and Glaven, who got batters out through changing speed and control.
Strassbourg will probably end up like Mark Prior. One or 2 great years followed by half dozen years ruined by injury, then slowly fade away.

Actually, having watched him pitch, he could drop down to 91-93 and still be a very effective pitcher. Plus it might add tons of movement to his fastball. But it might already be too little too late.
