Tubby sinks to low point at Minnesota

08:37 AM ET 02.14 | Tubby Smith's tenure hasn't gone as well as some might have hoped for the Gophers. This week might have provided the low point of an impressive career. Smith not only coached poorly; he became whiny, an unseemly characteristic for a supposed leader of young men. After his team lost to Ohio State last Sunday, Smith linked his team's weak play to Minnesota's lack of a practice facility. Smith actually told Minnesotans that it was hard for his players to walk across the street in the cold to lift weights, one of the most pathetic excuses in the history of sport. After his team lost to a struggling Illinois team at Williams Arena on Thursday, Smith called out a handful of his players for gutless or unintelligent play. He even criticized Blake Hoffarber, who is playing out of position and with a troublesome knee, for failing to draw more fouls.

So why did Tubby Cross the Street?

February 14, 2011  10:44 AM ET

Losing tends to make you irritable. Besides he sitting their in sub-zero temps and a foot of snow most of the season.... what's to like. Minnesota hasn't been a tough venue since the Dave Winfield-led Gophers sucker-punched and mauled poor Luke Witte and some other Buckeyes back in the 70's. Winfield is a HOF scumbag.

Tubby's attitude is especially troubling when you consider that he basically could have owned this the area given the that rather underachieving winter sports teams right now.

Instead of a facilities upgrade, maybe Minnesota just needs to hire a crossing guard to help the team cross the street.

Tubby seems tired and disinterested , at least against the Buckeyes. Shame to see his career end this way because he's a good coach and always appeared to be a decent person.

Let's see. Starting point guard out for the seasen [+]Devoe Joseph leaves team [+]Another player is academically ineligible [+]I think he is doing ok considering the circumstances. At best this was an Elite 8 team. If they make it to the second round of the tournament I think that is a great accomplishment.

What he is actually proving, is that the Kentucky team he led to the championship, was Pitino's. He is showing why he was forced out of KY, as the team slid under his coaching.

kicking a man that thought you were helping him up and then stomping his head , that school should have never been able to field a team again

I used to live in Minneapolis and Tubby is suffering from the February blues that infect many residents of that ice bound state. But it is dumb that a college like Minnesota cannot build a decent basketball/sports center in one building.

Tubby is frustrated because the team has lost a superior point guard in Al Nolan. He would have made the difference in the losses at Indiana, Ohio State, Illinois and at Penn State. That doesn't count the loss of Devoe Joseph, nor the very good big man Mo Walker. That would make anyone feel "blue".

Come on man! Some of the comments here are elementary at best and immature at most. Coach Smith has been thru the ringer here in Minny. Three (3) recruits transfer (Cobbs,White and BSmith), one recruit quits, (Joseph) one has hardship transfer (Carter) one has season long injury (Nolen) and one has season ending injury (Walker). We are still sitting in the 5-6 place in a tough B10.

Tubby went behind KY's back and worked the deal to go to Minn. so I guess he is getting what he deserves and Minn is getting what they deserve in a coach. UK and the BBN knew what he was and had no problem letting him go, really was glad he left. Are you Gopher fans not HAPPY with "10 loss Tubby" ?????
