08:38 AM ET 02.14 | Talks between the Flyers and Blue Jackets have reportedly broken down, but Philly is still shopping. The Flyers have turned their sights north to Toronto, where director of player development Don Luce was spotted taking in a game this week between the Maple Leafs and New Jersey Devils. A league source said the Flyers could be trying to land Kris Versteeg, whom the Leafs are purportedly shopping. Versteeg, who won a Stanley Cup with Chicago last spring, carries a salary cap hit of $3.08 million, which the Flyers could afford. He is also signed through next season.

So I take it they were looking at getting Umberger back from CBJ...who else from that lineup would be worth having and might be available?

Still not sure why the Flyers want to shake up their roster so badly. Versteeg is a guy you HAVE to play if you pick him up. Who gets taken out for him? Why not pick up true depth guys who can sit or play, depending on the matchup, so you can keep the #1 roster in the NHL intact?

Good points GC - The Flyers look super tough i would not mix things up whatsover if i was them. A weakened Pitt an inconsistent Caps team greatly improve Phillys road back to a cup final.

Blue Jackets aren't letting Umberger go, they are looking for guys to pick up as they are on a bit of a winning streak, and are going to need help in the Wild West. I believe the 'rumor' was that Philly wanted Voracek, but I do not know who Blue Jackets were trying to land.
Philly doesn't need anyone for exactly the points you noted - Pens are walking wounded, and Caps still cannot find the mix of scoring and good goaltending at the same time.
I see the B's putting up a fight, maybe Montreal too. The Rangers have Lundquist. The real test might be the Lightning - but still plenty of hockey left.

Pun intended or just coincidence?

But, if you can add a good piece to an already good product, why not? The only way chemistry is going to be affected is if they give up one of their leaders and/or get a Phil Kessel in return. I don't see that happening though. But a versatile 3rd or 4th liner won't hurt.

Versteeg is a very good depth player, a guy who can play on your 2nd or 3rd lines, 2nd PP or PK units and has Cup experience. He has some real trade value for the Leafs - something in short supply at the ACC. He is also signed afforably through next year - a plus for any inquiring team OR the Leafs should they keep him.

If I am Burke, I try to squeeze all I can for this guy because worse -case scenario is you still have a young, useful, talented player back next season. Something the Leafs need plenty more of... There is no rush to trade this guy.

Who gets taken out of the lineup? Easy - Zherdev. He hasn't been a total bust, but having Versteeg instead of Zherdev works for me.

The Hawks, as reported by the Detroit News, were also interested, but I don't see th BJs giving him up to a division rival.

I don't think this guy is a fit in Philly. He seems a little to soft. By the way, has Zherdev made a pass yet this season, lol?

Agreed. I'm not sure he'd see much 2nd line duty with the Flyers though. But, you're right, he can do a lot of things. He's an energy guy. Reminds me of Butch Goring for some reason. May be the beard?

Maybe BB can squeeze Zherdev out of Philly? ;-)

Montreal yes.

Bruins have been exposed. Just give the puck to the lummox and they will never beat you.

His mother said "nyet" to that. He's only allowed to date home grown girls, preferrably the ones with hairy armpits.

In Phillys case by "versatile" you mean "cap friendly"

Montreal didn't get any bigger up front so no threat there. Lundquist could surprise. The Flyers probably hope someone can take out the Lightening for them. Tampa Bay's had success against them.
