Two coaches on Galaxy short list

The Galaxy has narrowed its search for a coach down to two high-profile international candidates -- the Netherlands' Ruud Gullit and Germany's Juergen Klinsmann -- and a decision could be made as early as today. Indications are that Gullit might have the edge because Klinsmann has previously stated his desire to take charge of another national team prior to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Been seeing Gullits name EVERYWHERE! could it happen, me hopes so. Good the have a Blue here in the MLS.

November 8, 2007  08:25 AM ET

yeah, I saw it this morning on the news.
Both are capable!

Gullit has a big name as a player.
Worked as coach for Chelsea, Newcastle United , Feyenoord and the Dutch National team U-21.

And Klinsmann did a good job for the German national team.

I think Gullit really wants to go to LA. The fame and stuff its more his thing.

We'll see, can anyone keep me informed? US news travels slow overhere.

How's Gullit's coaching record?

November 8, 2007  09:07 AM ET

Yeah, it really sounds like it is going to be Gullit. I am happy with either choice, although I think Klinnsy would have made a bigger splash publicity wise. I still have some doubts about Klinnsy's coaching due to his lack of experience. Overall, I think Gullit is probably the right choice at this time.

Big Chaco, that's my exact question. I haven't bothered to look it up. But I vaguely recall his not being that successful. Could be wrong...No matter what, I'm sure he can teach the players quite a bit. What a stud player he was in the 80s and early 90s! One of my favorites. I used to have big posters of him, Koeman, and Van Basten.

I almost didn't recognize Gullit when I saw his picture in a story about this--no more dreadlocks.

your right x-country, more Americans probably know Klinnsy over Gullit, but I think Gullit might be best for the job. He's an LA kind of guy and I think he would represent them the wy they want to be represented, with a little flair and confidence. I used to have a Gullit poster on my walls when I was a kid. Cmon, Ruud!

For those who think a foriegn coach might be a good thing for LA, you may want to read this: http://blog.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2007/11/foreign_expertise.htm l

Oh, and the Daily Telegraph says the job's Guilt. He's already got an offer.

He got some coaching skills, lets see how it works out. I think he's good enough for the MLS.

According the dutch media (15:21 local time) Gullit is going to sign a contract for 3 years. Klinsmann refused a job at LA Galaxy.

November 8, 2007  10:45 AM ET

Klinsmann is a far better choice, mostly because he appears to have a lot better understanding of how soccer works in the states, something I think Gullit lacks and has submarined other foreign coaches...

November 8, 2007  11:35 AM ET

Klinsmann's asking price may be prohibitive, no?

November 8, 2007  11:37 AM ET

If he refused the job then it's a moot point anyhow. Never mind.

What's the over-under on how badly his name is pronounced by soccer and non-soccer fans in the U.S. Not GULL-itt. Not HOO-litt. It's the guttural ch sound of the beginning syllable. chU-litt.

Oh well, at least he is coming...

November 8, 2007  11:58 AM ET

Who cares AM? Americans can't even say Pele's name right. It's not "PAY lay", it's "pe LAY".

All time record is 84-52-44. Not that good with Chelski and Toon. A year of a decent record with Feyenoord.

Nothing special whatsoever. But the Lalas hype machine is going to make this guy out to be the next Wenger.

Hey Jaz, a word doesn't attain its official pronunciation until us Americans decide what it is, ;)...

November 8, 2007  12:25 PM ET

I don't know about his coaching, but I assume Gullit will be all about the Total Football, which would be great for MLS. We'll see whats up next season. I'm pretty sure ABC/ESPN will dedicate a big segment during MLS Cup on the Galaxy's new coach

November 8, 2007  12:44 PM ET

Works both ways. I've never heard my own name, Jason, pronounced correctly here. It's "JAY sin", not "jay ZONE".

November 8, 2007  02:03 PM ET

hell Jaz, most Americans don't even pronounce their own names right. :) Look at how many with German names say a 'k' sound when they have a 'ch' in their name. I won't even start with the '-stein' being pronounced like 'steen' by our east coast crowd. :)
