Eagles positioned to add Asomugha

08:05 AM ET 02.17 | The Eagles, though heavily committed to Asante Samuel, may be willing to pursue another star cornerback: Nnamdi Asomugha. The team isn't ruling it out, at least not for salary cap reasons. "If we went or didn't go in any particular direction it wouldn't be because of the balance of the cap at that particular position," Eagles president Joe Banner said Tuesday. He was asked about the theory that the Eagles wouldn't give Asomugha a huge contract because they are already paying for one Pro Bowl cornerback -- Samuel -- and might not be able to address all their needs if they tie up so much salary cap space in one position.

Why not just put a story out there that says which teams don't need to pursue secondary help. that would be a short story.

Well there is a statement full of commitment and focused direction.

After reading this 'story', it would seem that the Eagles are NOT in position to add Nnmandi after all.

So this is a possible maybe. Gotcha.

I'll look it up - sounds like Joe likes to say things without giving up a lot to chew on.

Typical from everyone involved with the current regime. Unlike Andy though, sometimes Joe will pull a politicians move, give you something, but then in the next breath COMPLETLEY contradict what he just said, all the while not missing a beat.

I think it's safe to say most teams would like to sign Asomugha.

Teams are actually in a better position by drafting first and then going the free agency route to fill the needs they did not in the draft. The owners are in no hurry to settle anything. They have all the cards. That 30% rule for pay increase is still in effect. The owners have not even asked to schedule a meeting before the march 3 date. Just a meeting of owners only.
500 free agents at that point lowers the cost. A flooded market.

Yep Yep. The players union is going to implode before it is over with because they are not united. I am not so sure that having players learn that they are not 'entitled' is such a bad thing.

If the Eagles want to win with Vick, they should strongly consider adding Asomugha. Their offense kept them in every game (outside of the one against the Vikings and even that was kinda close). Another top-flight corner opposite Samuel could really improve their defense to the point that the offense will not have to win shootouts all the time (unless they explode early like in the games against the Redskins, Jags, etc.)

That would just be too much money invested in one position.

The Eagles better do something...they have a long road ahead of them.

February 17, 2011  09:43 AM ET

The Eagles are a very frugal team and with Vick's deal going from 5 to about 20million for 1 year, do not expect much more from them...

Plus, the Cowboys are in the market to upgrade their secondary and do NOT be surprised if JJ makes a run of his own...and 1 thing is for sure...if JJ wants him, he will get him.
