Flyers looking to trade (or dump?) Zherdev

08:35 AM ET 02.17 | Ville Leino's lower body injury gave Flyers fans a hint at what the club thinks of Nikolay Zherdev. What's interesting is coach Peter Laviolette's decision to use Jody Shelley in place of Leino rather than the more skilled Zherdev. Zherdev has likely burned his last bridge with Laviolette and barring a dire need for him in one of the next couple games, may have played his last game as a Flyer. Sources have confirmed that the Flyers are trying to trade Zherdev, but are struggling to find a partner with enough interest to make a deal. If Zherdev does not get moved, don't be surprised to see the Flyers waive him, eat the remainder of his $2 million salary and create some additional cap room.

Freakin' Flyers! Did they not consider how upset Joe would be?

It'll be interesting to see if they change the article to match the headline and the picture or vice versa (or if they even notice.) Gonads!

Maybe Joe is the issue seeing as they won.

Let's see, Quenneville sick? Worrisome. Hawks beat the Wild..............make him sick? Don't think so. The Flyers part in this story? NOT ONE FREAKIN' BIT. It's nice to have a prfessionally run site, eh?

Zherdev for Kovalev!!! Gotta help with that housekeeping.

Nice to see all the big stories of the day right here on FN.

Help me out here Flyer fans. Why would Laviolette play Shelly instead of Zherdev? Zherdev has 15 goals in 47 games whereas Shelly has 2 goals in 46 games. Shelly seems to be pretty adept at getting into the penalty box though. Perhaps Laviolette wants to keep Zehrdev's line intact?

A seamless switch. And to think, I assumed these guys weren't good! Sorry.

Does this surprise anybody? I think even Flyer fans saw this coming when he was signed. An awful team like Columbus gave up on him. A terrible offensive lineup like the Rangers gave up on him. What made the Flyers think they could save him? Surprised it took this long, to be honest.

The equipment manager had a lot of extra "Zs" that he wanted to use up.

Ya think. Maybe the Flyers figured they could have a really talented guy coast because they have so many other talented players. I know he didn't like the KHL and came back, but that seems to be his destiny.

I give Holmgren credit for trying the Zherdev experiment. It didn't hurt the team in anyway, but it's clear that he isn't what they hoped he would be. Time to cut losses and move on. Getting Versteeg was the first step in that process.

Always happy to help explain hockey to a Pens fan :)

I read today that Zherdev is in Laviolette's proverbial doghouse. Don't know why except that Zherdev is not the most motivated of players and Laviolette wants guys going all out every game. I think the Flyers have been more than patient with him this season, it's just time to move on.

As for Shelley in the lineup, I can guess at two reasons. One is that the Flyers are deep on offense. All four lines can score so having Shelley in instead of Zherdev wouldn't hurt. The second reason is that it's good for Shelley to get some game time in as we have to play the Islanders some more this year and the Flyers want to be prepared :)

Does anybody even want him .... other than Bryan Murray and the KHL?

Exactly. The Flyers got snookered by a Kovalev doppleganger.

It was a calculated risk, not unlike one that several NFL teams took with Terrell Owens, although the issues were somewhat different. This guy had an aversion to perspiration, let alone contact. They thought they could shock him into a willingness to work.

Gonads!

Or Go Nads!

That takes me back to 3rd year at UBC when I lived in Scrotum Park on 6th Dene. Called ourselves the Nads. That way we could cheer Go Nads!
