Ottawa: Where $23M in cap space is 'not a housecleaning'

They'll have to install a revolving door in the Senators dressing room at Scotiabank Place before the Feb. 28 trade deadline because there could be a lot more sent packing before this teardown is complete. Two months ago, the Ottawa Sun reported Senators GM Bryan Murray was under orders to unload contracts as a serious rebuild with this organization was about to begin. ... "I'm trying to trade some other people or move some other people, but it's certainly not a housecleaning by any means." It's not? Sure looks like one. If Murray is able to unload all his unrestricted free agents before the deadline, then Chris Phillips, Jarkko Ruutu and Alex Kovalev will be gone. ... Already, the club should have $23 million in available cap space this summer.

At the point where you trade the 2 best "character" guys in your dressing room - guys most teams would like to keep around if they had the choice - you give away the fact that its a housecleaning. Fisher and Kelly were 2 guys most any team would want, if you're giving them away too, its clear this house is in the full cleaning cycle.

Maybe the Pens could get Ruutu back and then pick up Armstrong from the Leafs. Then they could have line with Cooke, Ruutu, and Armstrong. Wouldn't that be great?

How is it that the guy most responsible for constructing this mess is allowed to fix it? Obviously Murray has made a boatload of mistakes (letting Chara go, signing Redden, signing Spezza to a ridiculous deal, never finding a goalie, signing Kovalev to a laughable contract, the Heatley fiasco, etc.. etc. ) so how can you trust that he is able to fix it?

Maybe nobody else worthwhile is willing to do the job with things the way they are...I know I wouldn't want MY name on this team right now. Let Murray dump the contracts, blame him the next 3-4 years it takes to recover from this.
