Why Bruins needed Kaberle, Peverley

08:44 AM ET 02.19 | The Bruins are better this morning than they were yesterday morning, with Tomas Kaberle finally aboard as a much-needed power-play specialist and Rich Peverley added for grip-and-rip (59 games/161 shots) duty at center or wing. Factor in Tuesday night???s acquisition of veteran Chris Kelly, a get-in-the-dirty-places center, and the Bruins are a broader, sturdier, more complete bunch as the playoffs approach.

Did Toronto get its draft pick back from the Kessel deal with this trade?

February 19, 2011  10:07 AM ET

Because the Flyers are the deepest team in the NHL and the Bruins are scared.

No, they got Boston's 1st rounder, which will probably be somewhere in the low to mid 20's. Toronto gets a 2nd rounder in 2012 if Kaberle signs an extension in Boston and the word is that the B's management has already met with Kaberle's agent.

Apparently, Peter Chiarelli's conscience has been gnawing at him ever since robbing BB blind with that Kessel deal so, he gave some of the picks back..

The Bruins also got Boris Valabik with that Peverly deal. The Bruins now have, not one, but two lummoxes on their blue line.

The two friendly giants from Slovakia: Chara and Valabik! Chara at 6'9" and Valabik at 6'7"

Those two, plus Kaberle, they hope should scare the Flyers a little.

I think the Flyers forwards are smiling knowing that Kaberle will be on the ice...Can you say soft?

Chiarelli definitely isn't afraid to pull the trigger on a deal, that's for sure. If I was a B's fan I would be pretty giddy right now.

Bullocks! Chiarelli overpaid for Kaberle. I agree with GB, Kaberle will disappear in the playoffs.

I agree but, you have to give the man a chance to appease his own conscience! Kaberle might make him feel like he has Kessel back in the fold. Now, he can start worrying about his own bleeding ulcers.

Well, Kaberle hasn't made the playoffs for so long someone will have to remind him to show up at the rink after April 10.

"the Bruins are a broader, sturdier, more complete bunch as the playoffs approach."

Broader and sturdier have never been used to describe Tomas Kaberle.

St. Louis Blues acquired Kevin Shattenkirk, Chris Stewart and a2011 or 2012 2nd-round pick from the Avalanche for Erik Johnson, Jay McClement and a 2011 or 2012 1st-round pick.

February 19, 2011  01:47 PM ET

Bruins are actually good this year. If they can get Rask playing like how he did last night, they can get deep in the playoffs with two good goalies and rowdy fighters.

LMAO - Too true, too true. (And now the Leafs have nobody with playoff experience.)

That is the deal I'd much rather have seen Chiarelli pull off (to get E. Johnson).

Chiarelli said there was a "dynamic at play" between the two clubs and why he was willing to pay a premium for Kaberle, even if it was true that the B's were the only team he'd waive his NTC for.

Maybe in the east but I can think of 3 teams in the west that are deeper Hint one of them are playing with the top 4 D-men from the farm one have a wheel on the front of their jersey ....

Out of all the trades, Shats and Stewie-by would've been the best fits for the Been-towners though eh. The Blues have made out like bandits over the course of the last years moves. For my money, they're a team with a future - 'bout time, too! Eh-rik would've been the nail in St. Peters... now I can see the the Quebec City Aces arising from the Rocky Mountain High-men.
