Texas a Big 12 title threat

08:21 AM ET 02.21 | Texas may stand the best chance in returning to prominence among a cast of power programs coming off down seasons in 2010. Texas has had three highly-rated recruiting classes, so there is a lot of talent on the roster. But a lot of the most talented players are sophomores, redshirt freshmen and freshmen. If junior QB Garrett Gilbert makes progress in taking care of the ball and making better decisions (especially in the red zone) and the run defense gets better, the Longhorns could re-emerge as Big 12 championship contenders this season. They need to improve the running game, but they have some good young linemen and star RB prospect Malcolm Brown coming in. The revamped coaching staff probably will be a plus, too.

Since the children of the corn are no longer on the schedule, the horns will have to beat more than just the Red Faders if they are going to be in contention.

Said it before...they need to play with a little edge instead of an attitude of highly sought after recruits. IMO, they just went through the motions last year and had absolutely no passion, intensity or urgency.

Besides them and Okie, they really don't have much of a schedule, oh yeah, Okie State, but not much.

Besides Zero U, last year they lost to the likes of Iowa State, Baylor, Kansas State, the sheep molesters from College Station, etc, etc...so they need to be ready to play everyone regardless of perception.

However, they definitely have enough talent and at least have made some changes instead of staying with the same. IMO they can beat anyone...or get beat by anyone if last year's effort shows up at any time.

DC, you forgot UCLA. :-)

Mack Brown sure hopes so!

Yes I did OT...and a few more since they lost seven! And UCLA didn't beat many people besides the rust colored cows!

DC, that was my point, UCLA sucked big time last year.

As did the Horns.

TX should finish 2nd behind OU w/ the talent they have... But w/ the new system and coaching... I could see them finishing 3/4 as well

Very possible...could be a year away.

Another year like last season and Texas fans will quickly forget about that National Title in '06.

There is a difference between Rivals talent and real talent. When the interior line, on both sides of the ball, starts playing up to their "Rivals" potential I'll believe we can win the conference.

And, again this time around?!

Yes!!!

Too bad there won't be a championship game (I would expect TX to be in it if there were) - will be weird to have that all decided before December.

February 21, 2011  11:21 AM ET

Optimism always runs high this time of year. Reality says middle of the pack is much more likely for the rusty cows.

Once the new coaches and the players get on the same page, the Horns will be tough again. The question is, how long will that take?

Ditto for the Gators, with the extra battle of "substantially changing your offensive scheme" tossed in, since I don't think anybody is saying the Horns are making as radical a change as going from a spread to pro-set like UF. If I'm off about that, straighten me out.

So, chances are the Horns will be good again before the Gators will.
