08:03 AM ET 02.22 | Ozzie Newsome found a way around fully answering the question about the team's intentions with Willis McGahee. According to an NFL source, the Ravens decided at their recent evaluation meetings not to bring McGahee and his $6 million in base salary back for the 2011 season. McGahee is under contract to the Ravens for 2011, but 2012 ($6.5 million base salary) and 2013 ($7.2) are option years, according to the seven-year contract he signed in 2007. When asked if the Ravens were going to cut McGahee, Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome replied: "I have said there will be no players released before March 3." When asked if McGahee would be on the Ravens roster before the beginning of next season, Newsome said: "Right now, there are a lot of things that could happen before next season."

When did McGahee start wearing number 52?

February 22, 2011  08:14 AM ET

Besides, they have Ray Rice. Why do they even need McGahee?

February 22, 2011  08:18 AM ET

McGahee is a nice #2 back, but not with that price tag.

What a bunch of B.S....Ozzie says.. "I have said there will be no players released before March 3."
What he really means is he has no players like Butler , the colts safety, who are due roster money if they are still on the roster March 3. If McGahee was guaranteed that money by being on the team March 3, he would cut him.

Finally! I can draft Ray Rice and not have that **** McGahee suck up all the 1-yrd TDs after Rice does all the work to get to the 1!

McGhee will somehow find his way onto the Jets' roster.

So what is your point? Teams cut players who are owed expensive bonus by March 3rd.

There are much cheaper back-ups for Rice out there. RBs are a dime a dozen.

The Colts did. The Raiders did. The Ravens would too if he had money coming to him then by being on the roster. Any team would. That roster bonus is usually due in June and then September ( first game ).
It was a meaningless, B.S. statement by the GM. It costs the team nothing, not one penny, to do nothing now. That is all. What he is really saying is, it costs us nothing to do nothing about him now.

The Ravens haven't used him enough, anyway.

Or maybe i should say that Cam Cameron hasn't used him enough.

There were games (like the Pats game) where McGahee didn't get ONE effing carry!!!

WTF Cam???!!!

From $3 MM last year, to $6 MM this year. That is a ton of money to pay someone who does part-time work behind Ray Rice.

February 22, 2011  01:43 PM ET

Running back is the disposable/replaceable position on teams these days. No need to draft one in the first round; no need to pay them a high salary. There are a lot of good ones that can be had in the lower rounds of the draft, and for a reasonable price.

Well short yardage would probably still go to McClain or someone else- Rice is a good homerun back but I wouldn't say he is every down back

McGahee's 2011 contract also calls for JP Losman to be 3rd string QB for Baltimore and Travis Henry to be let out on parole. And, of course, for Ozzie Newsome to dress up as Santa Claus and have all 12 illegitimate children between Henry and McGahee at his house for the Christmas that neither of their fathers were able, or most likely unwilling, to provide.
