08:38 AM ET 02.22 | In a bit of irony, Tom Renney is stumping for Sheldon Souray. Unfortunately for the Oilers defenseman, 29 other teams don't see it Renney's way, and even though blueliners are at a premium in playoff races, they all passed on the 34-year-old with the booming shot when he was available on re-entry waivers this past weekend. He cleared at 10 a.m. Monday and now is technically on the Oilers roster, but he's actually been put back on waivers to be returned to the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears, where he has been on loan since the end of training camp last fall. "Yeah, I'm surprised nobody took Sheldon ... it's a bit shocking to me, really," said the Oilers coach. "If you're asking me, I'd have taken him, but that's just Tom Renney running off his mouth. He's a good player."

Then why isn't he playing for you in Edmonton???

Yeah i dunno why no one took him, he's a good player. Oh yeah, just put him back on waivers to go down to the AHL a second time, but yeah, he's a good player...

More durable than DiPietro but not as durable as Malkin.

right...no one took a guy that the coach won't play, with a questionable work ethic that gets injured frequently...

...and that mouths off in the media...and that looks average down in the minors...and that has a huge cap hit....Other Teams if interested can sign him cheap next year after the Oil have to buy him off.

Not a bad reason. I'm up there 2 or 3 times a month and that chocolate is really good. The hockey ain't bad either.

Some of these contracts are hurting the players in the long run (though if they care more about the $ than playing in the NHL it isn't hurting them).

"Renney shocked no one claimed Souray"

Seems like Renney and Souray are the only ones.

Because Steve Tambellini won't let him, that's why.

If the GM says, "He ain't coming back here!" It doesn't matter what the coach thinks, does it?

The contract didn't hurt Souray. Souray did!

He told the team he didn't want to play for them...so they are trying to move him. He didn't show up to training camp at the start of the year and demanded a trade. Apparently scouts from the Rangers went to watch him play recently and they said he can't even keep up to the fast guys down there so what chance does he have playing D in the NHL. So it's not really a surprise no one wants an often hurt (over-priced) and slow d man.

Maybe he should inquire with some Belgian hockey teams then.

trying to get something for the guy...

You gotta think if he was making $3 instead of 5.5 or whatever it is that he'd have a better chance of someone taking a risk on him, but that cap hit is ugly and most teams can't fit a slow dummy on their team for that much coin.

So Souray must just be cursing his union right now, eh? I bet he'd happily rip up his contract to get another shot at playing in the NHL. But the PA won't allow it. And I wouldn't be surprised if Edmonton doesn't buy him out either, because then that buyout money counts against the Cap. Though I don't know if they intend to spend to the ceiling next year anyway.
