Why Eagles' Kolb is likely staying

08:04 AM ET 02.23 | The decision to keep or move Kevin Kolb has implications reaching beyond the roster. There is no question that Kolb's maximum value to the Eagles, as an asset to be traded, is right now -- or, rather, as soon as the NFL's collective-bargaining high jinks are concluded. The problem is that, because nobody can accurately predict the new labor landscape, or the timing issues, to be forced to trade him for draft picks that don't arrive until 2012 is nobody's idea of maximum value. Which is why Kolb is probably staying. There also is no question that Andy Reid needs to win a Super Bowl in the next couple of years or that will be that for the Eagles' coach -- putting an organizational premium on short-term maneuvering rather than long-term planning. ... Which is also why Kolb is probably staying.

or because the supposed asking price is ridiculous.

Kolb is staying for 2011...
In 2012 - he is starting...
Iggles aren't going to franchise Vick another season.

I keep telling people on Eagles Message Board this. The only way you deal Kolb (which because of Vick's injury history is a huge strength) is for a blockbuster deal. It needs to be a tangible stud draft pick, like a Von Miller, Prince Akumura, Robert Quinn, etc. Not simply a package of picks.
Plus, I am not convinced that Kolb isn't ultimately the starter here in the long run.

Some teams are still willing to pay the high price for him, especially the teams that have nothing to lose next season. like the Vikings.

Because no one else wants him?

That would be an incorrect statement.

I think the screws are starting to turn for Reid. He has 2 more years on his contract. Without a Superbowl win, I don't think he is extended. I definitely gather that ownership and upper management are starting to get restless.

There are multiple teams interested in Kolb. Will they give up a 1st? Probably not, but don't kid yourself, Kolb is a hot commodity.
The QB draft class is very weak.

I hear you, but outside Philly, the concensus seems to think he isn't worthy of a 3rd round pick.

Even so...a first rounder for a guy who has started 7 games? Ok it is the Vikings but after getting burned on the Randy Moss deal, they may not want to be so generous with picks.

I hope so because I want him to stay. I love Vick but he gets battered. If the Eagles would like to challenge for a Super Bowl with Mike Vick, they need to have a very good back up QB. This would be the only year you can do it because Kolb is cheap this year ($1.4 million).

There are a few others as well who would go for him. Detroit, Miami ....

Folks, you have almost a dozen teams that need a QB.... and none of the Draft Class are close to starting in the NFL. If the lockout lingers, you could have about a month to get your roster set.
Tenn, Seattle, Arizona, Minnesota, Miami, Buffalo, Carolina, and Jax are all looking to get a young starting QB.

If more a dozen teams need a QB, why would they want Kolb?
You yourself said he's not a starter for the long run.

There a lot of stupid owners that don't get that though.

This is the same as last year. McNabb is my starting QB. He is gone to Washington. With the CBA coming one day, he will be traded.

I didn't say that at all. Can he start on a team over Vick? No. Vick is dynamic.
Can he start over John Skelton, Tavaris Jackson, Charlie Whitehurst, Chad Henne, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jimmy Clausen.
