Panthers GM: Taking QB not out of the question

08:06 AM ET 02.24 | Panthers general manager Marty Hurney is on the clock, and whatever he says between now and the draft will be viewed through the prism of Carolina's draft position. The Panthers, who hold the No. 1 pick, will be among the teams seeking answers from former Auburn QB Cam Newton, who left Florida amid allegations of academic fraud and was at the center of a pay-for-play scandal his father tried to orchestrate with Mississippi State. Hurney would not address Newton specifically. He said the Panthers would be open-minded in preparing for the draft, and said the fact that they took a QB with their first pick last year would not impact that approach.

Yes, just what the Panthers need, problems on top of problems.

February 24, 2011  08:16 AM ET

So hard to find a good QB.

February 24, 2011  08:18 AM ET

One would think with a record they had there would be a pile of issues to address. Having 2 inexperienced qb's...really?

February 24, 2011  08:28 AM ET

It's easier to build a defense first, especially with a defensive minded head coach. They should go with Bowers.

This is going to be an interesting pick. I have nothing against Cam Newtom but something tells me he is going to be a bust. He reminds me of a Vince Young...and look how he turned out.

I don't see the Cam to Vince comparison, other than they're both 6'6 and black...

February 24, 2011  08:31 AM ET

He said he will do great at the combine. We shall see.

I said the same thing about him, until the other day...

He had an interview with Peter King, and talked of how he is the greatest. How he accomplished more in one season than others have in their entire collegiate career.... He also said he considers himself an entertainer/athlete, which is also not good.

That type of talk can only hurt his stock. Nothing wrong with being confident, but he's borderlining disrespecting the game and position with that type of attitude... Still believe in him, but at this point he needs mentoring... Maybe a call from McNabb, Vick, Moon, Cunningham or someone of that stature, would be most beneficial for him, right now.

I think he cost himself some money with that interview.

The Greatest?

Accomplished more in one season than others have in their entire college career? Sure if you count one-and-done guys sitting at the end of the pine.

Tim Tebow might debate college legacy with Newton.

The Bills should look at a QB finally, but whether it's Newton, ...

Big money.

Because you have to wonder how he'll handle adversity when that collegiate "stardom" doesn't translate in the NFL.

I think he is comparing that they play the same style of game, that both were juniors coming out, both Heisman, and assuming Newton goes 1st round - both would be relatively "raw" at running an NFL offense.

Actually, Moon is giving him advice. Whether he takes it, that's another story.

and yet another similarity to VY - no respect for the game

The essence of arrogance and stupidity. A bad combination.

A rookie QB with a "tude". Ha, that works.

I can see that helping a ton. Important to stay hungry, but humble.
