10:41 AM ET 02.27 | The Minnesota Democrat out to get rid of the Pentagon's sponsorships for NASCAR teams says she won't back away from her efforts and will broaden her fight to repeal tax breaks for track owners, too. U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum says her work could save taxpayers tens of millions of dollars. But Department of Defense officials and lawmakers from North Carolina say the sponsorships help military recruitment, and that the tax breaks could save jobs in the struggling economy.

If they want to destroy unions to save money, I guess Nascar might be next. No surprise that N.C. would fight this and I really don't think they are concerned with military recruitment.

I usually don't get political here, it's a sports site, and someone will always be offended. So I'm sorry to those that disagree, but I am really concerned how many politicians are trying to destroy so much in America pretending that they are trying to 'save the taxpayers money'. We're seeing attempts to bust unions, 'defund' things like PBS, and now, even NASCAR. Don't these pols know how much money in taxes is collected at a race from ticket sales? The hotel and restaurant money that comes in to a town? The souvenir stands? If they pass these bills that will chase out investors it will COST money in the end. They can't see past next months bottom line. And I am very worried that it's only going to get worse.
End of rant.

I'll concur with Rickapolis here with the not wanting to get too political with the subject.
Now to speak on what he said: The Taxes being collected are at the state and local levels, these are Federal level politicians attempting to pass these bills. So they most likely don't know how much these things effect the local level economies.

I agree with Rickapolis and SLY....for arguments sake, there isn't any government body, in any country, that isn't wasting $$$$$ in many levels......so why pick on Nascar.
The Armed Forces and National Guard, etc, remind me, a Nascar fan, to remember the troups who fight for all of us..
If they are really after wasted funds then, fix all forms of waste, not just Nascar.....and as Rickapolis implied, sponsorship funds vs revenue collected.....how big is that gap, really?

Raistwalker, good point about local taxes.....but shouldn't they make themselves aware of that, as part of the process.

Little E, the only thing they are AWARE of is their own pockets, the towns they are from and some idiot that sits behind a desk and thinks these porjects up.

So maybe there's some savings to the federal budget, but for crying out loud, there are much bigger fish to fry!! How big is the defense budget, and what percentage is spent on sponsorship? .0001%? How about cutting other more substantial areas first.
But it's all about the easy cut, and this is perceived to be easy. Politicians don't (can't) make hard decisions, so they trim a little here, little there and expect we'll all sing their praises.

I for one think of another aspect in support of the sponsorships.. the men and women of our armed forces rally around and support who their branch sponsors, much like a lowes or Home Depot employee.
These dollars seem huge to you and me, I cant even think in millions, ,much less billions and trillions, but let's first worry about earmarks that build bridges to nowhere, $25M border stations on the canandian border with only a closed road leading to it, and the like.

Nice to see that we've been across the board on opinions here, yet no name calling. Maybe we should send this to DC to use as an example of how people can discuss issues if they choose to.

The first thing she should do is get rid of the tax breaks in her own state for the Vikings, Twins, Wild, Timberwolves, and all other professional sports that the owners get for having the teams there. Once she has cleaned up the tax problem in her own state, then she can worry about the rest of the country.

Not the face that launched 1000 ships. I wonder if she'll make sure that new stadium the Vikes want will not come with any state money involved.
