Poorly designed Tour courses
The PGA Tour season is over, so it's a good time to review the courses that played host to tournaments. Most PGA Tour courses were a case of the same old, same old, week in and week out. The courses where major championships were held, and which the PGA Tour doesn't run, were the strongest in terms of architectural principles. One problem is that too many courses that hold PGA Tour events are wrapped around residential communities. The developers want tournaments held at their courses as a means of drawing attention to them. But it can't help their cause when players dislike courses and say so. One player who didn't want to be identified was asked about the Arnold Palmer-designed course that was host to the recent, oddly-named Ginn sur Mer Classic at the Tesoro course in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Palmer and his associates designed the course as part of a huge residential development, and it wasn't intended for a PGA Tour event. Walks between tees and greens were enormous. Members use carts. Asked what he liked about the course, the player took a moment, and answered, "It's got a lovely clubhouse." Well, clubs that are host to PGA Tour events all have lovely, or at least gargantuan, clubhouses. Some, like the new clubhouse at the Tournament Players Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., are so massive it's difficult to find one's way around.

Rodney Dangerfield had it right in Caddy Shack. Country clubs and cemetaries are the biggest waste of prime real estate.
