07:27 AM ET 03.02 | Barry Zito took the mound for his first spring training start Monday and walked the ballpark. It wasn't exactly what the Giants had in mind, and here's a message to all those fans who have seen enough of Zito: He's walking a very fine line within the organization. A source close to the team indicated Tuesday that there is "exasperation" with Zito, that his status as the No. 5 starter is "definitely not safe," and that the team would even consider buying out his expensive contract before Opening Day if that's what it takes to say farewell.

Has Cashman given you a call yet?

March 2, 2011  07:41 AM ET

Wow. That would be $65m just to say goodbye.

Red Sox paid the Dodgers to take Manny. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

The Red Sox paid about a tenth of what it would take to buy Zito out. I don't think the situations are that comparable.

No, it's definately not compareable but he has really been lousy and not really trade worthy. What other options do the Giants have at this point?

QUOTE(#9):

Surely this guy has some trade value, even if the Giants have to pay part of the salary.

With a 4.45 ERA over four years in the offensively anemic NL West, I wouldn't think too much value unless the Giants paid practically all of the $21.5m/year he's due over the next three.

He's also got a full no-trade clause.

If I were the Giants, I'd send him to the Richmond Flying Squirls.

They need to find a team in a similar situation, with a unproductive player with a large salary and hope a change of scenery can help them both.

Hmmm. I live in Richmond, we don't want him.

One of the all time worst contracts. Might have looked good at the time.

Nope, at the time it looked really bad. Just looks worse now, maybe the Giants thought that if they got Zito out of the AL, he'd fare better against the NL and their weak hitting.

When the NL teams in the West tee off on you, you suck at a grand level.

Don't even think it looked good at the time.

I remembering shaking my head then too.

Being a Dodger fan, I remember being grateful as it would tie up significant $$$ and prevent them from finding another impact player... course then I remembered the contract we gave Jason Schmidt and Darren Dreifort and immediately started drinking...

This morning the Muslim Brotherhood warned the United States that if the United States meddling in Egypt continued they intend to cut off America's supply of 7-11 and Motel 6 managers.

If this action does not yield sufficient results, cab drivers will be next, followed by Dell, AT&T and AOL customer service reps.

Finally, if all else fails, they have threatened not to send us any more presidents either. It's gonna get ugly, people.
