Senators waiting for trade offers
If any NHL team wants Ray Emery or Martin Gerber, they have a funny way of showing it. Senators general manager Bryan Murray hasn't received any inquiries from other NHL GMs regarding his goalies, but that could change as teams inch closer to the 20-game mark. While the Tampa Bay Lightning, Pittsburgh Penguins and Los Angeles Kings wouldn't mind getting help in net, Murray isn't in any hurry to make a deal.

OK, so the Sens trade Gerber or Emery. If they do, who do they have for a backup? (DC)

Its too early in the year to trade Emery. They should wait until the trade deadline. At this point I can't see them letting Gerber go, not the way he's playing. They should get what they can for Emery now while his stock is high.

First, you guys are crazy to even consider that the Sens would trade either one of their goalies within the conference... Second, if its gonna be anyone, it will be Gerber; he has had more failure than success, and its not hard to say that he isn't the determining factor in the Sens amazing start. Emery is younger and cheaper... Not only that, last year he proved he could play in the post-season... Gerber's last shot playing hockey past April... Oh yah... He was demoted for a 22 year old, after he won 30 plus games in the regular season... If he has time in Ottawa, he will collapse. Murray is trying to get rid of this guy while he looks like he is worth his ridiculous contract ($3.7M/y)... Come January, he will have caused some sort of slide in Ottawa, which Emery will be forced to try and recover, and of course, Murray being the horrible GM he is, will be stuck with an overpayed backup goalie...
(side note: What was Ottawa thinking keeping Murray around? Did they not see what he did in Anaheim before Burke saved them?)

i agree with everything ya said rounder.... except about murray... im not a fan of his coaching abilities but he built more than 3/4 of the anahiem team that beat them last year... the only big thing burke did was trade for pronger... all the young stars they have were drafted by murray... including the players they traded for pronger...

Why would they trade either one? Going into the playoffs with a one two punch in net is a great way to go. They dont really need anything and cap is fine. I'd wait and see.....

I would also lean towards trying to keep both tenders for a while longer. Gerber blew it last year, but he looks stellar this year. A big reason is the Sens are clearing the rebounds he lets out better. Emery has lost the trust of the organization with the constant off-ice stunts. Also, if the Sens could lose one of these guys for a prospect - a good one - they would free up the money they need to keep Redden in the fold, as Redden has made it clear he'd be willing to take a discount (to a degree). I see Murray taking his time on this - especially since he's waiting for calls, not making them.

I'm pretty torn on the whole thing. Emery is still young and I think has a higher ceiling as a player going forward. Gerber is older, but also doesn't have much mileage on him since he was a backup for quite a few years. Ideally it would be great to keep both, but having 6 million tied up in goalies doesn't make much sense. The thing that makes me tilt toward trading Emery is the fact Jeff Glass seems to finally be coming into his own in the AHL. He could conceivably be the goalie of the future and Gerber the present. You sign an experienced backup like Cujo and I think that gives you the horses needed for a cup run, along with some assets back in return from the trade.
Ideally I would like to see whoever gets traded to be traded out west, since I hate trading a player in division or conference since it's so much more likely to come and bite you in the butt.

emery will get traded......ottawa never planned on him being the starter, thats why they signed gerber a couple seasons ago. they don't think emery has what it takes, even though he has proven himself as a number 1. he could go out west, to st. louis, edmonton, phoenix, maybe LA (tho they have bernier coming up next year).....i think maybe detroit.would be perfect for them, hasek is unreliable, injury prone, and probably in his last year. emery for osgood and a prospect would be good for both teams.....the only way he would be traded in conference is to another division, meaning pittsburgh, washington, maybe atlanta

For those Senators fans, remember it was Brian Murray who traded 50-goal man Bobby Carpenter from the Washington Capitals and that franchise has never recovered from that. I will predict that your franchise will never win the Stanley cup as long as Murray is your coach, GM, or anything else connected to deciding player personnel. It was very apparent that the Ducks outcoached your team in the finals last year. I had 10 years to watch him lose big game after big game, despite having the better players. You will too!

buddy8304: I'll take this opportunity to point out some of the flaws in your argument against Murray. He essentially built that Ducks team, drafting the stars of the future Perry and Getzlaf and building a team that went to the 2002-03 finals. He was in Detroit for 4 years and essentially laid the groundwork for what would be the juggernauts that has been the Red Wings for the last 12 years. You're definitely drudging up the past with Carpenter, considering that happened 20 years ago and he wasn't even the GM.

modsuperstar: yes, and you saw what happened when he was with the Wings or the Ducks. He NEVER won the big game. I would not give him credit for building the Red Wings into a championship team. It happened AFTER he left. Do you see a pattern here? Maybe the Sens will win the Cup AFTER Murray leaves!!! It was Murray who made the decision to trade Carpenter. He told David Poile, the Caps GM, that Carpenter was "disruptive" to the team and sent Carpenter home a practice one afternoon. Poile was left picking up the pieces and trying to get something for a star player, now disgraced. You saw what happened to the Devils after Carpenter and Stevens joined that team. They won the Cup. Any player who disagrees with Murray's philosophy, will be traded or let go. No matter how good they are. When it comes to winning the big game, you need star players to make the great plays. The one thing he doesn't get is that you win with great goaltending and you lose with mediocre goaltending. The Senators have mediocre goaltending at best. Unless they pick up a proven winning goalie or have a star in their minor league system, this team will always be a bridesmaid and never a bride in winning the Stanley Cup.
