08:36 AM ET 03.02 | Most NASCAR drivers don't come to mind when you think of Las Vegas crime fighters, but then again, most NASCAR drivers aren't 69-year-old Morgan Shepherd. The veteran of 44 NASCAR seasons was getting out of his rental car in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store Monday evening just minutes away from Las Vegas Motor Speedway just as three men burst from the store's entrance with security forces trailing behind. That's when Shepherd, a daily jogger and fitness perfectionist, sprang into action. "I just got out and took off after them," Shepherd said. "I caught one of them just as they were getting ready to hop a little wall at the end of the parking lot. I yanked him down and got on top of him." Shepherd said in a matter of seconds a Las Vegas police officer pitched the ageless NASCAR driver a pair and handcuffs and continued pursuit of the other two suspects, along with the store's security force.

I believe the point of the story is that unlike a vast majority of Americans who would refuse to get involved a guy with NASCAR values immediately stepped up and did something that we all would like to believe thatwe would do. We get this "redneck" sort of "unevolved humabnoid" monicker thrown at us in the media because we like to watch and attend car races as opposed to going to the art gallery or the latest live theatre.
I have a great deal of respect for the Morgan Shepards of the world and would hope that I would act in kind should the situation arise.

Well done, Shep. And I suppose we should be grateful for the post. But something actually to do with racing would be nice. But I guess I'm getting greedy.

How sentimental.
And myopic.
One.....one NASCAR driver presents himself valiantly, and you hoist him above the ''who keeps track'' of everyday hero's from all walks of life, stories that go mostly unreported. (Never mind the doctors, police, firemen, soldiers, teachers, etc., etc., etc. that are unrecognized heros day in and day out.)
I've been attending racing, all types, since I was three years old. I also received a scholarship to attend the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, and I still appreciate art and artists, encluding live theater.
By attempting to divide NASCAR fans from what you seem to infer are more intellectual activities, you re-inforce the very stereotype you act as though you want to achieve distance from.
How charming.

kelso - I aint smart enough for your high-brow conversing.
I'm sorry to have to ask but I'm confused...- what does "encluding" mean?
Also - thanks for pointing out that teachers belong next to soldiers in the "hero" conversation....I wasn't aware that was true either...well golly. sure is nice doing all this learnin'
