07:44 AM ET 03.03 | Reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman never has been shy about expressing his opinion when it comes to the Cubs or his hometown team. "The Cubs have a chance to be improved. I don't think they're good enough to win the division," Brennaman told us Wednesday from Arizona. "I think their defense is very suspect. They have a kid [Carlos Pena] at first base who is an all-or-nothing guy. He either hits the ball out of the ballpark or he makes an out. So to say that the Cubs are a 'contender' -- that's a stretch.

The Cub's need lots of improvement but up until last year the Red's and contender weren't normally mentioned in the same sentance either.

Oh. the Cubbies will be a contender, but they will be contending for last place in the NL Central.

Wouldn't it be a giggle if the Cubs ended up in front of the Reds?

K-Mark, I think Brennaman's dislike for the Cubs is almost as strong as yours.

Don't go too far out on that limb there Marty.

Since when does Marty Brenneman matter, outside of the typical 300 or so fans scattered in the reds bleachers? I am sure he predicted the Reds season last year, especially that dynamite post season run.

Anyone asking if the cubs are contenders lack a sense of reality. Been a cubs fan all my life. Nothing but overpaid, strike out bums on this team. You can't even blow up the roster and start over with all these horrendous contracts.

I love Stargate. But the Cards fans won't be giggling as the Cubs will end up ahead of the Cards. Please tell me, btw, who hates the Cubs the most - the Reds or the Cards. My friend on the east coast is a Cards fan and he HATE the Cubs with a passion. Is this normal?

why bother hating a team that has never won a thing?

Pretty normal, Cubs/cards is bitter, not as bad as Cubs/sox. The Reds are rarely aknowledged as even existing by either team. Good times.

This is very true. And all you idiots talking about how the Reds had a bad playoff series or that the Cubs will contend until late in the season. Doesn't matter. Contender means chance of winning division or world series. The cubs are neither. What's it been? 100 years? NOTHING WILL CHANGE THIS YEAR.
