08:03 AM ET 03.07 | Outside Quentin Jammer and Shaun Phillips, no Chargers defender has started as many games over the past four seasons as Stephen Cooper. Cooper has come a long way in eight years since signing with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Maine -- from longshot to special teamer to backup to mainstay. His run is likely over. It hasn't been made official, but he knows it. "I think I'm going to have an opportunity to test the market," Cooper said Saturday. ... The Chargers are, likewise, excited to give Donald Butler a shot at a starting job after he missed his rookie season with a torn Achilles'. And they will likely make a strong run at keeping Kevin Burnett, who will also be an unrestricted free agent.

Maybe now he can play for a team that values winning over stroking the GM's ego.

March 7, 2011  08:45 AM ET

Yeah, but the real question is: Are the Chargers done in San Diego?

March 7, 2011  08:48 AM ET

Be thankful Stephen that you can now find a real team with some clue about keeping players.

How many players do well for sustained periods after a torn Achilles?

March 7, 2011  08:51 AM ET

Come to Indy, Stephen. There's plenty of room for you!

AJ Smith looks like he should be walking a beach with a metal detector.

the only metal he'll find is the plate in his head...

I'm not sure what he should be doing, but being GM of an NFL team doesn't spring to mind.

Not any I can think of. They try, but not the same. Never heard one say they came back stronger.

Who?

If you don't have to stop and change directions quick you should be fine, but if you can't Walmart is looking for greeters.

Where's my OMG Ben Leber is a free agent "T&R?" He's as equally middle of the road as this Stephen Colbe, ****, er Cooper guy. Where's Derrick Coleman when you need him?

March 7, 2011  10:59 AM ET

Seems to be the Chargers way.

Yup... It's only a matter of time.

Yeah, still looking for that ring. I hear they have nice ones on sale this time of year.

March 7, 2011  12:09 PM ET

Yo Stephen. Philly would love to have you.

March 7, 2011  12:18 PM ET

If I didn't know better (and I'm not sure I do), I'd say AJ Smith was actually TRYING to build a losing program.

March 7, 2011  01:24 PM ET

Will be 32 before the start of next year, missed 5 games due to a bad mcl, is expecting a lot of money for fairly average MLB production. Yeah, I can see why we are saying good luck on next team Stephen.

AJ is a terrific GM. I hope he is with the Chargers for years to come.
