Broncos backing off Orton trade

08:04 AM ET 03.07 | As long as Tim Tebow is around, the quarterback depth chart will be of interest in Denver. It sounds more and more like the Broncos are backing off a trade of QB Kyle Orton. We hear the team prefers to have a veteran quarterback on the roster, especially if a lockout causes a long layoff. The original rumor was that the organization was looking for a second-round pick for the signal-caller, something that could not happen with an expired collective bargaining agreement.

The new CBA or the complete lack of one is going to make for some interesting tactical decisions.

The Broncos need ALL the security blanket they can keep.

Right now a second round pick is prime stuff: get a good player without the guaranteed big money that a first rounder gets. I'd hesitate to dump those high picks until I see what a new CBA brings on the rookie payscale issue.

I've got faith in T2 to get it done whenever given an opportunity under center. He's a winner and believer. Good luck Tim.

Is Tebow really that bad? I mean the guy has the physical tools, the leadership skills, and the will to learn. What is the problem here?

The question with Tebow is whether he can develop properly if he's thrown to the wolves in a starting role too soon with a weak team around him. A lot of potentially good QBs were ruined that way - David Carr, Joey Harrington ...

c'mon mods ... get to work ...

I understand that but it just seems like the organization is down on him. Look, the Broncos stink. This guy is the guy to build around.

Must have realized what keep he was.

there have been a number of qbs that have had to endure rotten teams before getting a good group around them ... some quicker than others ...

Just as a recent example...For every Sam Bradford there are many Ryan Leafs, David Carr's and Jeff George's. The QB landscape is like a highway in west Texas...lots of carcasses on the side of the road.

Ryan Leaf ruined himself by being a headcase.

Makes sense. Short on draft picks with some of McDaniels wacky trades and they need a ton of help on defense. By the time they (hopefully) get good Orton's contract will be up. They better hope the CBA gets done way before the draft though. I like Kyle and he'll help somebody.

This situation sounds just like Brett Favre trying to buy a television. OOP"S I said the "F" word!

A 2nd rounder? They weren't gonna get that for him anyways, he's a solid QB, but nowhere near a franchise guy... and with athletes these days there is almost no drop off from the middle of the first round to the end of the second.
