Maddon: Rays' stuff matches Philly rotation

08:14 AM ET 03.07 | All it will take, says Joe Maddon, is time. Maddon was asked, as so many other baseball people have been this spring, to look back and identify a starting rotation as good as what the Phillies have. While pondering past possible comparisons to the group of Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels (plus Joe Blanton), Maddon also looked ahead to what he said could be a promising comparison with the Rays' own group of David Price, James Shields, Jeff Niemann, Wade Davis and Jeremy Hellickson. "The difference is experience," Maddon said. "Stuff-wise, our stuff matches up with their stuff. Among our starters, absolutely -- stuff-wise, pitch for pitch, guy for guy. Our stuff matches up. ... We're maybe a younger version of them right now."

Come on. Really? They are good, Joe. Why do you have to go further than that?

March 7, 2011  08:34 AM ET

Oh so I see Joe Maddon (who, by the way, needs to get a life with those dorky hipster glasses he wears all the time) is smoking crack. How nice. I guess he and Charlie Sheen have the same dealer.

Hey Joe ... you're the third best team in your own division. Deal with it. Your ass-kicking in the World Series three years ago was a blind squirrel finding a nut. You're never going back because you suck, your team sucks, your stadium sucks, and your fans suck. See ya, freak.

You can have all the "stuff" you want but experience wins tough games.

I second this. Ring some more cow bells Tampa fans.

my stuff comes from the stuff mart ...

are you serious

March 7, 2011  09:18 AM ET

This is going to be tough in this division this year.

Whatever do you mean??? :-D

I don't have a problem with Joe Madden's comments. I wouldn't have made such a statement, but... He's got young bucks in his starting rotation. As long as their heads stay where the sun shines, they'll need a GM who strokes their egos. It'll be a tough row to **** this year. They need all the PMA they can get.

Seriously, mods... You let the spammers invade this space, but have your auto-editor bleep out "tough row to h-o-e"? Are you serious?

When my mind is in the gutter, I seriously doubt I'll leave myself vulnerable to the bleep nazi.

March 7, 2011  09:44 AM ET

speaking of stuff, let me have some of that stuff Maddon is smoking. Rays will be back to being insignificant this year.

March 7, 2011  09:52 AM ET

Personally, I like the Sawx staff. I think Buchholz and Lester become top level starters. Lackey and Beckett bounce back.

I wouldn't sleep on Toronto's staff either.

No they don't.

I saw The letters W T F on a national comercial, so the FCC says it is ok. W.T.F.? The cencor bot is out of control. Or maybe it is us.

No they don't.

Yeah, no other fans have passionate opinions.

Personally, I love the Braves fans the best. They were in 1st place last year and had about 100 people at their home games. But we have to hear how those 100 people are "classy". Woo hoo!

Why shouldn't Joe have confidence in his pitchers?

Third best team in the division? Give us your loot and we'll see what happens. And have you ever been to the stadium or do you believe just what you're told. You sit outside in 90 degree heat and 100% humidity night in and out and complain when you don't have a roof over your head.

March 7, 2011  10:08 AM ET

Really? When you can brag that your #4 pitcher is a World Series MVP then you might have something there.

You mean the staff that had the 10th best ERA in the AL last year? Only .08 better than the Indians' team ERA. They also lost their best pitcher from last year.

I'll keep my eye out for them. . .

Romero, Morrow, Cecil, and Drabek have just as much "stuff" as the Rays staff.

I must have missed that. I thought they won the wild card. They also averaged 31k per game ranking 13th in the majors.

But, you know, why let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Saw a lot of empty seats when I saw their games.
