Gruden hire sets stage for Benson return

08:05 AM ET 03.08 | Cedric Benson broke the 1,000-yard mark again this past season, but that doesn't mean 2010 came without its frustrations. It's no secret that last year the Bengals got away from the power running game that made them successful in 2009. Without a fullback for most of the season and in a scheme that was more concentrated on throwing downfield, Benson averaged more than half a yard less per carry (3.5 compared to 4.2 in '09) and had only three 100-yard games. With Jay Gruden replacing Bob Bratkowski as offensive coordinator, Benson, who will be an unrestricted free agent whenever a new collective bargaining agreement is reached, is receptive to returning to the Bengals for a fourth season especially after a recent 90-minute conversation with Gruden.

This organization is done. They begged one of the worst coaches in all of sports to come back, then they begged their washed up QB to come back, and now they want to get back to running the ball with a overrated Cedric Benson? Wow. I predict 2 wins for this team next season.

(And they're so dumb they might not even draft Andrew Luck. They may just draft ANOTHER WR to make Carson Palmer happy) smh. This organization is sad. I feel for their fans.

Must not think he can get a job elsewhere.

There are so many things wrong with this organization. Where to start?

That's easy. Mike Brown.

Mike Brown, the Al Davis of the AFC North.

Regardless of who runs that offense, you still need a quarterback and last I checked, Palmer wants out.

They'll still have another Palmer on their roster <chuckles>.

Ouch!

<sigh> Marvin Lewis is in the exact position (in the pic) that Mike Brown wants him.

They should fix the defense. Then they won't suck nearly as bad as they do now.

But - they will still suck.

I personally don't think Benson is overrated. Maybe if they had spent their '09 draft pick on a quality lineman instead of an overweight bum that ran his 40 shirtless (Andre Smith), maybe some holes would've opened up for Benson to run through.

They can start by slappin' themselves for acquiring the services of Roy Williams and Pacman Jones.

Benson leaves and any chance of an offense at Cincy goes with him. Benson is more important to the team than Palmer.

They should've thoughta that before investing in the T-Ocho show. How is Benson to get his carries with both of those divas whining for the ball? There aren't enough balls to go around, and Palmer doesn't have the balls to deal with that fact.

Mike Brown think??? L-M-A-O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the other hand, if the OTHER Gruden was hired there would be a trail of veteran QBs on their way to Cincinnati.

I would hope they do not draft Andrew Luck as he is not in the draft.

As good of a place to start as any... add Tank Johnson to the list also.

yep ...Cinci never really addresses that problem. No wonder Palmer wants out.

I'm sure Palmer's 23 turnovers (20 ints and 3 fumble lost) did not help that defense out much...
