Should Goodell resign?

08:05 AM ET 03.09 | Roger Goodell's work this week may come down to a simple decision. Does he want to be a $10 million mouthpiece for NFL owners, or a difference-maker who rescues his employers from themselves? It's one or the other. Because when it comes down to it, Goodell has a single job as commissioner of the world's most profitable sports league: make the NFL trains run on time. If he can't do that, then it's time to find another conductor. That's right, Goodell should resign immediately if this owners-created labor dispute becomes a living, breathing lockout by the end of Friday's federally mediated negotiating deadline. Once the owners press the nuclear lockout button, then Goodell must go.

If the owners are smart (a longshot) they will figure out they are better off without this clown!

Lets overreact some more

I don't know Bro... without this clown the Owners may expose themselves as a bigger bunch of clowns.

They have already done that by opting out of their own deal and claiming poverty.

Goodell should resign because his bosses are stupid? By that logic, shouldn't most everyone quit their jobs?

More keen insight from ESPN. Thank you, Worldwide Leader!!!!!

Yeah, fat chance of THAT happening. At least he is at the negotiations to ensure nobody hits anyone too hard.

Exhibit A - Fay Vincent...

Why wait until Friday. Run this choir boy out of town today. They should have never hired him in the first place. He is as out of place in the NFL as Bubba Smith is at a Mary Kay convention.

That picture is living proof that a cape does not make you Superman.

Is this is the best you can do, world wide leader of sports?

All this NFL labor talk cracks me up! The owners hold all the leverage here and this is how it should be. The NFL is just a business and it should be treated as such. The Commish is the CEO, the Owners are the board members, and the players are only employees, nothing more, nothing less.
Right now they are compensated very, very well for what they do. If they want to fight for a raise then show what you can do on the field and you'll get a raise but when it comes down to running the business, let the owners and the commish handle it! The owners go to sleep each night with hundreds, if not thousands of peoples well being on their mind. They make decisions that could cripple their orginazation or make it prosper. But the blame all falls on them when they fail. The players go to sleep as employees of a business and just worry about themselves and their families. They are paid to complete a job and lets be honest, they PLAY A GAME FOR A LIVING!! They get ample vacation and great healthcare while working for the company. They get great sign on bonuses and if they invest their $$ right, they can retire before they are 40 and live a great life.
I can never side with the players on this because without owners where would they be?? If you side with the players then ask yourself this, what do you think the players would do if they bought an NFL team? Do you think they would side with the players or with themselves?

What's your take on dying of a heart attack vs. dying of cancer?

March 9, 2011  08:32 AM ET

Nuclear lockout button??? Nice sensational line, FN.

He shouldn't resign. He should be fired.

Doesn't make sense, why agree to a deal, then opt out of it two years later? It boggles the mind.

I'd rather go like my grandpa did, in my sleep peacefully. Not screaming and crying like the other people in the car!!

Whoa... S.I.com pulling stories from ESPN...

you make some good points, but perhaps slightly over-simplified IMO...the players are employees; however, they are also the product and without them the owners own nothing but some pretty cool real estate. i dont make it a habit of believing everything i read, but it sounds like the owners have been less than open about their finances, and asking for another $1B off the top of the $9B total, without showing the NFLPA their books is a big pill to swallow. also, i'm not convinced that 18 games makes sense. again, agreed that the players are employees, but so are the ticket sales people, the parking attendants, the guy selling beer, etc. who (no offense intended) could be replaced a bit easier than they players. there's an agreement here to be made with luck by the end of the week.
