Sox to walk away from Wakefield?

08:12 AM ET 03.09 | The new-look Red Sox have an old friend in Tim Wakefield, who may be at a crossroads entering 2011. Wakefield is a forgotten man in the eyes of many if not most Sox fans. He had a great run, would've been nice to see him break the wins record, but the time is past. It's a new day, all that stuff. And you know what? That's OK with Wakefield. He can live with low expectations. "I've been in survival mode for 18 years, you know what I mean?" Wakefield asked at his locker on Tuesday. ... There isn't a spot for him in the rotation, and the bullpen is loaded (another change in the last year). Not unreasonable to envision a scenario which sees the Sox letting Wakefield go before the start of the season, is it? Thanks for the memories, have a day for him in June and move on.

hard to imagine they let wake go, but stranger things have happenned i guess...hes been a class act and huge part of the team for so long and deserves the upmost respect from the organization however they decide to handle this.

Wakefield has been a great teammate and invaluable at times in his career with the Sox. Over long seasons he has been able to fill in as a starter on occasions and as a reliever when needed due to either injuries to other pitchers etc. Of course being a knuckleballer you never knew how his stuff was going to be from outing to outing but thats the nature of the beast. My only other complaint with him is when from time to time when behind in the count he would try to sneek in his 70 mile an hour fast ball past hitters and 99% of the time it got hammered. But Wake was a class act and I'm sure will be missed. Maybe not so much by the Sox catchers trying to snag that damn butterfly he threw up there though. Good luck Wake.

I thought the protocol for aging players in the AL East was to give them a 3 year $51M contract.

You gotta love that guy. Gotta love Aaron Boone a little more, but you gotta love way-back Wakefield. A big part of baseball's greatest rivalry.

The guy has almost won 200 games, including 11 double figure win seasons, and he's never made more than $4.5M in any year. I think he should immediately be named Governor of Massachusetts.

I had no idea the mere mention of Aaron Boone would cause the bitter tears of Red Sox fans to well up again. In the interests of keeping this thread on the low end of a bipolar episode, I will refrain from mentioning the name of that player whose name is Bucky Dent.

One time this postal worker in Southie went batschytte one afternoon and shot forty people on the sidewalk. Imagine his shame when the co-worker he had been talking to that morning told him afterwards "DUDE! I said that lottery winner was a LUCKY GENT."
