08:08 AM ET 03.09 | Players often look forward to trips to New York, not least for the food, but for Gordon Hayward it became merely another anecdote added to his penny-pinching clip reel. The line to get into the Olive Garden was a whopping 40 minutes long. Hayward has been teased about this dining dilemma since he tweeted about it Sunday night. "I knew people were hating," the 20-year-old said, "but I don't know what's wrong with Olive Garden, to be honest." Nothing, perhaps, if you're in Sandy. But a meal there while in Manhattan? "It fit his budget," Jazz veteran guard Earl Watson said, chiming in while rubbing his fingers together and poking fun of his teammates. The penny-pinching Hayward, who has a multimillion-dollar contract but drives a Honda, didn't deny that. "We wanted Olive Garden," he said, laughing. "Anywhere it's good pasta, good breadsticks, good salad."

Outside of the rich, wreckless NBA elite, who doesn't respect that? I think most of us who will work to support our families until our 50s and 60s can appreciate that. Just because you make 1+ million a year for 5-10 years (if he even makes that, no clue) doesn't mean you have to eat a 7 course meal at the Oceanaire everyday of the week. Antoine Walker is the prime example stupid.

If you don't understand it yet, you will soon...
Though I have never seen a car get better gas mileage than a 98/99 accord. I once saw someone drive 120 miles with their gas light on... and I lost fifty bucks in the process.

I watched him when they played the Knicks... he's pretty talented and scrappy. Should have stayed in school though, but he'll be in the league at least ten years playing good minutes...
Gotta love the fact that he is being smart with his money. But going to a locally owned, mom and pop restaurant in NYC is always the way to go regardless of your budget... in most cases it is cheaper than Olive Garden anyways.

Gordon Hayward $2,356,320 less agent fee & taxes is, I guess $1m Net ...on a Rookie contact which this season and next are guaranteed, then it a Team option for the next 3 years .... one knee injury from a short career. ...
being smart with your money and using the per Deim money to **** ....
vs Sprewell had a bank loan on a house that cost less that $1m which he lost in court.

Nothing wrong with being a little frugal.
Nothing wrong with developing this reputation.
I have to agree with the author, when in Manhattan, you can do better than the Olive Garden. Also, what does it mean to "be in a Sandy?"
