NHL losing grip on Coyotes?

08:31 AM ET 03.09 | Gary Bettman and Bill Daly addressed the press Tuesday at Jobing.com Arena. The commissioner acknowledges there is nothing he can do to thaw the bond market, that there is no plan B, no alternate strategy. If Goldwater Institute simply holds its ground and stays the course -- maybe for days, maybe for weeks, at most for a couple of months -- it can kill the deal without even filing a lawsuit. ... Bettman looked like someone who was playing his last card, trying to save face, trying to set up a future speech in which he can claim he did everything he could to keep the Coyotes right where they were.

did the League ever have a grip on this situation?

The Dwarf was pretending to have a grip on the situation, but I think he really had a grip on something else.

Gee, maybe somebody else, someone with money could come and buy the team and move it to a market where it would be profitable. I have someone in mind, but the league keeps turning him down.

The NHL wants to have it's cake and eat it too.
An owner with deep pockets isn't going to buy a team and be forced to keep it in a market that will lose money and play in front of minimal crowds.

I like how the article says, "trying to save face"...to real hockey fans, that ship has LONG sailed
I am reminded though, of an olde LBJ quote, 'Sometimes while you're saving face you''re losing your ****"
Well, we hockey fans still have THIS ****, and we can't seem to lose him

Only Gary could time things this way !!@!@!!!! When this dies it will officially be to late to effectively move the Team in time for next season. That window has got to be almost closed already-to quote that gilded tongued rabbit.."what a Maroon"

I'm shocked. I thought he could raise the dead. (And the Phoenix market has been dead for a while). Look on the bright side.....................Stranger may get a home team in Hawaii!

By the way Burgh-fan. Great comment on what the Dwarf is gripping! You're on a roll the last couple of days.

March 9, 2011  09:39 AM ET

When even Bettman realizes this has gone on for far too long, this has gone on for far too long. Move this team the day the regular season ends, so they can at least have time to get organized and make their run next season.

As much as i'd love to see em back in Winnepeg, don't be surprised if Bettman makes a run at Kansas City 1st. You know how he is with hockey teams being in Canada and all...

March 9, 2011  09:51 AM ET

This really is shocking news. I can't believe this is going on. I am flabbergasted. I never knew there was any issues with an ownership problem in Arizona

I was thinking the same thing....Where is that Blackberry Billionaire when Bettman needs him!! Should of sold them and moved them to Hamilton or Winnipeg when he had the chance...to bad Bettman has too much ego and not enough brains.

It seems so appropriate that the meeting was held at Jobbing.com arena considered how the commish has jobbed the fans for so long.

So we all know this is likely a dead thread.

What's everyone's take on that Chara hit on Pacioretty last night? I only saw the highlights, as it was apparently more important to air Leafs/Isles and Col/Minn up here. Continued brilliance on NHL programming.

Anyway, from the highlights, it looked terrible, but more unfortunate than dirty. It seemed to me to be a hit Chara throws often, but unfortunately, this time the victim ended up head first into the stanchion. Suspension or no? I say no, but not strongly...

If he would have rubbed him out against the boards anywhere else, this is a non issue. That's a dangerous spot though, and players need to be aware of it. I was fine with the game misconduct. I don't think he intended to faceplant that guy on the stanchion, so i'm thinking no suspension.

I'm trying to give Chara the benefit of the doubt but how could he not see the stanchion coming? And the timing of the elbow was sketchy, too. I suppose Pacioretty could have put the brakes on before he hit the stanchion. They both certainly seemed to be looking up ice so I don't know how they couldn't have seen it coming. Not sure a suspension is necessary but wouldn't complain with a game or two.

How's that for being definitive? ;)

March 9, 2011  11:01 AM ET

Phoenix will be gone, Goldwater isn't budging. And they will get moved to Winnipeg, because despite Bettman's "distaste" for pulling a team from America and moving it to Canada, they already have buyers and an arena quietly in place while they waited for Glendale deal to blow up. So as soon as the NHL has decided enough is enough and that Phoenix is just a money pit (this is not the NBA and the SuperSonics here. There are NO FANS.) I bet within a week, Winnipeg will have bought the Coyotes and by the end of the month, have the team in Canada. And they need to change the name too, or the colors or something.

As far as Kansas City goes - don't be surprised if Atlanta ends up there, and Columbus is moved to the Eastern Conference. Detroit ain't going no where, no. 1 main draw for Western Conference teams.

I commented right after this happened on the Rookie thread yesterday.

I was watching live while eating dinner and my initial reaction was "He's dead."

Then "Or his neck is broken."

But not once was I after Chara. And initially I was thinking he might not even get a penalty. I had not thought of the interference angle.

So I'm not in favour of Chara getting suspended.

But the whole game he was exposed as an immobile lummox. Which of course I always knew he was.

And the Habs won.
