Boeheim remains hostile to Big East tourney format

08:22 AM ET 03.11 | Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim is still not a fan of the Big East's double-bye format. The double-bye came into existence when the Big East decided to expand its tournament to include all 16 conference teams. However, in the two years of the current set-up, the double-bye teams went 3-5 in the quarterfinals. Last year, Syracuse was the No. 1 seed, but lost to Georgetown in the quarters. Even after beating St. John's, 79-73, in Thursday's quarterfinals, Boeheim remained opposed to the double-bye. "I've said for two years now, when you sit around 'til Thursday, it's not good," Boeheim said. "I think it's difficult for the top seeds to do that. I'm glad we won so that everybody doesn't think I'm crying, but I don't think it's a good way to do it."

Then finish further down in the conference standings and you won't get the bye!

That said, I am not a fan of conference tournament winners getting the automatic bid. Call me old fashioned but I think winning the grind of the conference season is a truer measure of a team.

I agree....When conference tournaments came into being, it was a way to have a lessor team, who was hot for 3 days, get an NCAA bid.

Love the answer DC! Just slip up a bit during the season, and play lights out in the tourney.

I'm with y'all on the conference tournament. Of course, it may be because my team has been the "regular season" champ 5 of the last 6 years, but we can't beat UNLV that third time!

Perfect example of why the tourney winner auto bid is insane.

I gave my rant about this on a thread yesterday. I also believe the conference regular season champ should get the automatic bid. If the conference doesn't want to give the auto-bid to the regular season champ, then put the conference champion in the finals of the conference tournament.

Yo Blaqk and others, where are the pics?

As of yesterday, Big East Double-Bye teams are now 6-6 in the last three years. Keep in mind, however, that three of those losses are by one team: PITT, a team which we all know cannot handle the pressure of a high seeding or any extended rest period of time. Please also note that teams with double-byes went 3-1 yesterday, two of them thoroughly and utterly DEMOLISHED their opponents (Notre Dame and Louisville), and another one just beat the hottest team in the Big East (Syracuse). I don't think the DBs are such a bad thing. If anything the Double-Byes give the Big East Season MORE meaning because they give you something to shoot for in the regular season if you can't quite win that championship.

Possible solution to the conundrum? Reward both the regular season AND conference tournament champs auto-bids. Whatever slots are left open afterward give those to At-Larges and we can all go home happy.

I agree, it kind of makes the season not worth as much as it used to be. And I don't like the bye's either. Ha Ha, you are so right, lose a lot and you have to be the bye, that's funny.

The season might not be worth as much, the the ticket revenue of the league tournament is of higher importance. Its not about the game, its about the money.

He is right. but the only way to fix it is to earn your way into the tournament. 16 teams is too much, and only there for more $.
