Inside NFL-cable power struggle

Power is what the NFL is about, and power is what it desperately lacks in its battles against cable operators who will not carry the NFL Network on basic or digital basic. The league has never met an opponent that has played smash-mouth business the way Comcast, Time Warner and -- to a lesser public extent -- Charter and Cablevision have. "For once we're in the position of an independent programmer as opposed to a content-seller," Frank Hawkins, the league's senior vice president for business affairs, said yesterday. And the resistance has surprised him. Currently, about 8 million of the NFL Network's 35 million subscribers come from cable; nearly all the rest are from satellite.

And the poor, poor NFL has only itself to blame. Good job in alienating your fan base.

November 14, 2007  07:10 AM ET

Yeah,

When you guys figure out who's going to be taking my money and who gets how much, let me know. In the meantime can we just watch some damned football.

November 14, 2007  07:19 AM ET

kneel before zod.. err goodell.

somehow, the nfl hasn't figured out that in business they have to be willing to give and or compromise. guess when you're a billion dollar a year monopoly and used to having godlike power over the people working in the league, you might approach business negotiations like everyone owes you something.

hint: nfl needs cable, cable doesnt need the nfl.

November 14, 2007  07:34 AM ET

Goodell just suspended Time Warner for three games.

Well I would agree ith beer-n-drums except I have to say that the NFL is greedier of the two...

Firstly, The NFL sells its games via Sunday Ticket with DirectV selling the fans "down the road". The NFL is now trying to dictate where you watch the games and WHO your cable provider is! I believe that this was the plan all along. The NFL knew that cable would NOT want to give away a piece of the NFL pie. The NFL makes a TON of money from TV and when TV wants to make a little the NFL cries "FOUL"... "You don't like your subscribers.." etc...etc..

The NFL needs to throw the yellow flag on itself. They have basically taken the average fan out of the picture. They have shown that they just don't care if you don't have the money to come see them. Golf was the rich man's sport, well now it's football. Example... Super Bowl... the average family guy can't afford to go to that. The NFL should change it's logo to say "Taking the average fan out of the game since 1990" or "NFL -It's a corporate greed machine."

The NFL should NEVER be allowd to dictate how any company that also wants to make a profit use their "merchandise" This is like you going to Kmart and buying a blanket and being told by the cashier that you can only use it in the months of Nov-Feb and only on Sundays and only if you wash it everyweek.

I mean come on... this is the NFL telling its fan base "We don't care". Go to the MORE expensive and horrible service that DirectV has to offer and yes I'm a DTV subscriber but when my contract runs out next Nov you can bet I won't be. The service is the WORST. Anyway....

The NFL should be a pay per view service so the Fans [that they seem to be concerned about] can watch his/her team every week. This day and age and technology that shouldn't be a problem at all.

NO.... the NFL wants you to believe its the Cable companies evil empire that is holding you back when IN FACT its the NFL holding you hostage!

Its a pretty wicked channel - basically took over for MTV for me, when i got too old to watch the teeny-boppers' videos. I turn to it steady, so I hope for everyone that doesn't have it can get it soon, its a beauty channel

November 14, 2007  08:55 AM ET

1johnw, the avg family can't afford to go to regular season games. in Atlanta, one ticket in the nosebleeds of the GA Dome costs almost $50.....and this is to watch the Falcons! and forget about the lower level seats, those are over $100. i don't know about the ticket prices in other cities, but this seems totally outrageous to me.
gimme a break NFL.....i'll take the games that the networks have to offer and just look up the other scores on the net. and as for DirecTV's customer service.....you are right....it s-u-c-k-s!

November 14, 2007  09:07 AM ET

Agree 100%, 1johnw

November 14, 2007  09:10 AM ET

1johnw touched on this, but it should be noted that the obvious compromise between the NFL and the cable networks is to allow all cable networks to carry Sunday Ticket in exchange for them carrying the NFL network. But the NFL loves exclusive contracts (see EASPORTS) so this will never happen.

November 14, 2007  09:21 AM ET

NFL is the greediest one here. Thought they could stong-arm everyone into satellite. Kinda like the Howard Stern/satellite radio deal. NFL signs with satellite for exclusive Sunday Ticket, sends along NFL network as a freebie/discount. But then wants cable to pay top price for it. Scam and greed-100%. Their network and sunday ticket sucks anyway. Kiss all those sweet replays of great plays and hits goodbye-hello commercials wedged in between every down. I get a better game for free just watching FOX or CBS.

November 14, 2007  09:40 AM ET

NFL Network on DirecTV is awesome. Looking forward to the Thursday night games coming up. The only unwatchable program on NFL Network is Put up your Dukes. Who the hell gives Jamie Dukes a show? Who the hell is Jamie Dukes? He seems to be the NFL's Charles Barkley. Fat, bald, and talks for the sake of talking.

November 14, 2007  10:00 AM ET

It is total c.r.a.p. We are going through the same thing with the Big Ten Network. The NFL's stance is ridiculous. I don't have a clear view of the Southern sky, so I can't get Directv, nor do I want it. So, I get to spend Thanksgiving evening not able to watch my Colts play. Bunch of dillhole greedy bastages....

November 14, 2007  10:04 AM ET

Why should i pay anything to watch the NFL? Its just content. I can wait a day and evetually download every game on the net.

November 14, 2007  10:16 AM ET

"Why should i pay anything to watch the NFL? Its just content. I can wait a day and evetually download every game on the net."

Theres no way I could avoid watching scores, sportscenter, or reading the paper and already knowing the outcome of the game.

November 14, 2007  10:50 AM ET

I don't see the point of paying for a channel I would only watch once a week (at best) for the game, but that's dependent on if its a team I would actually watch.

NFL Network is crap b/c I dont' really care about paying for 1 game...I don't want my cable provider (TW) to charge me $1-2 more a month for it to be on basic (which NFL wants) and I wouldn't buy the sports tier (which the cable companies want to put NFL Network on).

Well, at least the Dallas v GB game will be on over the air tv here in Milwaukee.

November 14, 2007  10:56 AM ET

The thing is Comcast is doing dirty work under the table by changing extra
$5, Yeah right two geedy companies.
I have since dropped Comcast, for DirecTV
As they didn't even have the sense
to notify customers of extra change for $5.00
Talk about greed! :p

November 14, 2007  11:10 AM ET

I think that the NFL network started to boost their own ratings. Unfortunately it grew into a greed war. If this keeps up, I can see their ratings sink quickly. I have to agree iwth PackBrew42! I'm not going to pay for something I watch once a week for 16 weeks a year!

November 14, 2007  11:31 AM ET

Canada and Mexico can get the Ticket on any cable or satellite provider. The NFL and cable companies have monopolies, and no one wants to step up and do anything. Where I am I don't even have multiple cable companies to choose from, until Dish and DirectTV came around it was Time Warner or rabbit ears.
