Giants sticking with Manning

The debate over Eli Manning has been raging in New York for more than 3-1/2 years, since the day the Giants paid a hefty price to get him. "The only thing we evaluate is 'Can we win with this guy?'" Giants co-owner John Mara said Tuesday. Mara declined to give his answer, or to offer an evaluation of his franchise quarterback yesterday, but the feeling inside the front office has long been that the answer is "Yes." Their feelings have not changed this year, even after watching the former No. 1 pick get outplayed by Tony Romo, a former undrafted free agent, on Sunday.

I like Eli. I am beginning to think I am in the minority...

This is what happens with high draft pick QBs. You're stuck with them a minimum of 3 years because you've invested a lot of money and marketing into them. If you're unsure about the guy, it's hard to draft another QB without the current QB getting his panties in a twist (see: crybaby McNabb). Now you're stuck with a QB with hurt feelings and poor play. Either way, the Giants are screwed. Fortunately, Eli is just good enough to get the team into the playoffs. But no further.

He is not a great QB, but he is good enough. When you look around the NFL and see the guys lining up behind center, he looks better and better. Romo has outplayed every QB he has played against this year except for Brady. If that was the criteria for judging a QB, then there would be a lot of teams with no QB.

November 14, 2007  06:37 AM ET

We will stick with Romo. You can have Not the Peyton.

November 14, 2007  07:05 AM ET

thisandthat:
You're absolutely right. Drafting a quarterback with a high draft choice is risky business. You have to pay the guy huge money, and if you throw him in too quickly, you can destroy them, but if you let them sit around for a year, the fans start sreaming. The Raiders are seeing this with Jamarcus Russell. There have been exceptions to this, and I think of Troy Aikman, who was thrown to the wolves right away, but turned out pretty good, but sometimes it's better to get a quarterback through trade or free agency after their original team has gonethrough the growing pains with them.
Just a side note to Giants fans: Is Phillip Rivers doing any better?

if eli was a different hue, there'd be a few people yelling how this poor kid doesn't get a fair break. fact is, playing in the apple comes with a huge spotlight and a bigger magnifying glass.

he's not a bad qb. he's just not his older brother.

There is nothing wrong with Eli. Sure, he's having some growing pains, but no one here can deny that he's improving every year. What more can you ask? The guy just had a 6 game winning streak. During that period everyone was saying how well he was playing. Now that he loses one game against one of the best teams in the leage, you guys are questioning whether or not he should be kept??? That makes no sense...

Tell me, who else can you get that is better than Eli? NO ONE. Next subject...

You gotta consider him a top 10 qb in the league now, which may not refelct his abilities as much as the league's lack of quality qbs. Either way, dumping this guy would be a dumb moved, based on the fact that he would not be very easy to replace.

Top 10, before you all lose your minds on me, in no real order: Peyton & Brady, Palmer, Romo, Favre, Brees, Big Ben, Bulger, Hasselbeck, Eli. I guess Delhomme could be on that list, if he were playing, but that's where its at, in my eyes - and like I said, those names aren't in any particular order

November 14, 2007  08:35 AM ET

Two things : he deserves everything he gets for forcing a trade to New York - I love the fact that the media is all over him, he made his bed... so wah-wah.

Secondly, his last name dooms him. In sports having a famous sibling always plays a role in another's development. Welcome to your career, titled : You WIll Never Be Peyton. Starring poor ole Eli.

Hey Larry, i see you have no stones because you feel the need to have a "private" profile. Dude hike up your dress like the rest of the women on fannation who dont feel we need to hide our profile like a shivering girl scout.

He's a Manning....why wouldn't you stick with him?

November 14, 2007  09:08 AM ET

Cassidy's House#21 You are # 1
Thank you

5 interceptions and a lost fumble tells me he did not outplay trent edwards.

Rivers stats 2007- 10 tds 10 ints 77 rating
Eli Manning 2007 - 14tds 11 ints 78 rating

I do not think the Charger fans are laughing about much this year. I would rather have Eli Manning than Rivers as my QB. Now and in the future.

November 14, 2007  09:19 AM ET

Is Eli a bad QB? No. Is he a great QB? Depends on this weeks definition of great QB. How quickly we forget that until the end of the last SB his big brother was a choker, could never win the big one, will always be a bridesmaid............ So making a determination of 'good' or 'great' is pretty much foolish. For those who remember, Aikman was considered a waste for his first two years, seems to me he finished out all right in his career so who knows! Same with Brady, patsies win the SB, but everyone said to go back to the proven vet, Bradys not good enough for a full season or the starter role. guess that early determination may have been a little presumptious!

November 14, 2007  09:20 AM ET

He is a good, not great QB. The Giants did not lose to the Cowboys because Eli played badly. They lost because Dallas had a better team. The Giants need to learn how to cover T.O. before the whine about Manning.

Of course whining is their strongsuit.
