Big 12 puts Leach on notice

Outspoken Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach was fined $10,000 on Tuesday for his criticism of officials Saturday following his team's 59-43 loss at Texas. Leach, often entertaining, apparently didn't amuse Big 12 administrators with his lambasting of officials. Along with the largest fine in conference history, the Big 12 issued him a public reprimand for his comments. The Big 12 prohibits coaches from commenting on officiating. According to a statement from the Big 12, Leach was also put on notice that the penalties would increase for such future behavior and could result in his suspension.

They should put a leach on his carotid.

I know how he feels. Big 12 refs blow.

November 14, 2007  10:18 AM ET

LOL. Leach, you really don't want to pick a fight with the refs. If you want to rant, take on the media. They can't throw calls against you in future games, and plus, you'll be a YouTube superstar in no time!

I will never agree with Leach on anything because he is certifiably pscho, but that doesn't necessarily mean he is wrong. Another Big XII coach a few years back had a public postgame interview blasting the Big XII officiating and how it helped the 'horns in their BCS chance, and I agreed with Mangino back then. The 'horns do get the benefit of the doubt, a lot.

This is typical. Conferences discipline the coach, but never the officials who disgrace their profession with their own incompetence.

Oh, no doubt, the Big 12 features questionable officiating. I just don't think that's a smart long-term move for Leach. It'll be interesting to see what kind of calls Tech gets from here on out.

When did Vince Gill start coaching at TX TECH?

November 14, 2007  02:09 PM ET

Whatever happened to that whole first amendment thing? They got rid of that in Big 12 land?

What happened to your gag order about politics?

You sir are a pedantic prognosticator!

The kid dropped the ball coach. Shut up. On this one you're wrong.

i just think this is hilarious. when OU played tech last year, he didn't seem to be criticizing officials then! replay clearly showed that the receiver dropped the ball in the endzone. then on the following play they showed the replay on tv, and the lineman took down kindle (#2) when he was coming up the middle; the flag came before the ball was even out of the qb's hand. just another example of leach trying to make excuses for his team not winning. here's a thought, maybe they should start trying to play a little bit of defense...it might just work!

Big XII officials are still incompetent - rob Oklahoma of a TD on 11/17.
