08:06 AM ET 03.16 | Many believe the signs are pointing in one clear direction. The Carolina Panthers will select Cam Newton with the first pick in the NFL draft, or are working hard to convince the football world they plan to. If a team craves Newton and offers the appropriate picks, the Panthers could trade down -- but not too far down -- and take Patrick Peterson, the fine cornerback from Louisiana State, or A.J. Green, the tremendous Georgia receiver. Without a collective bargaining agreement, however, draft day trades become more difficult since only picks, and not players, can be exchanged. ... The Panthers will return to Auburn for a private workout with Newton Wednesday. One group of Panthers was scheduled to have dinner with Newton and his family Tuesday, and another group is scheduled to have dinner with him tonight.

If this happens, things will suddenly get very interesting in Carolina.

They put the stink on poo!

If Cecil wants $185K from the Panthers to take Cam to dinner, the Panthers might want to re-consider.

NO! I want the bills to draft him so they can continue their futility. As long as the 9ers don't draft him (which I don't think they would even if he was available), I don't care where he lands.

If his father is just looking for a way to make money, I hope he goes undrafted.

I still dont think Newton will turn our to be a great QB. I've mentioned in previous posts that he reminds me of Vince Young and look how that turned out.

He's a Vince Young/JaMarcus Russell hybrid.

Keep feeding him and he'll end up like JarJar for sure.

Add entertainer/icon to the mix and you have... not much else.

The Panthers had better hope this works.

History shows what happens when you screw up picking a QB with the first pick...

It'll be Chris Weinke all over again.

I'd say this is a smokescreen to hide their real pick, but I'm not sure the Panthers think that far ahead.

March 16, 2011  08:54 AM ET

Ha! if this happens then I guess Clausen didn't LUCK out when Andrew said he would return to Stanford......thus putting an end to his very very very short career as an NFL up and coming youngster.....

March 16, 2011  08:54 AM ET

If you could trade the pick...I would definetely do it.

The perpetually bad teams usually don't.

Trading the slot for multiple picks would be good since the whole team is basically one big hole to fill.

A team with real cajones would use the pick on the best player and not on the best hype.
