Rule changes could hurt Cowboys kicker

08:05 AM ET 03.17 | With the NFL contemplating rules changes in the kick off procedure, Dallas may be especially affected. The committee wants to move up the spot for kickoffs by five yards to the 35-yard line. It also wants to have the ball spotted at the 25 rather than the 20 after kickoffs. The intent, competition committee chairman Rich McKay said, is to limit the number of injuries on kickoffs. The rule could also create a need for directional-kick off skills and penalize a strong-legged kicker such as David Buehler of the Cowboys. In the last two seasons, Buehler is tied with Atlanta's Michael Koenen for the most touchbacks with 51. The rule would decrease the value of a touchback.

no **** Chico. Regardless, it's a stupid rule change. has anyone seen actual statistics on injuries on kickoffs? Are they any worse than on punts?

The other proposed change is to make blocking wedges illegal. Try that first and see if it has an impact before messing with the touchback rule. Although I do think a new focus on directional kicking would be interesting, it just doesn't seem worth it.

They're doing this to limit the number of injuries? How? By making touchbacks more likely, and kickoff returns less likely? WHAT KIND OF STUPID CRAP IS THAT?!?!?!
A kickoff return is exciting. A touchback is boring, boring, boring. Why bother even kicking off? Just put the ball at the 20, or the 25, or whatever, and eliminate an possibility of injury.
Look, guys, there's another "rules change" that was instituted by the TV networks a while back. After a touchdown, there's a long "potty break" where we get to relieve ourselves and go to the fridge for another cold one, while the original "cold one," Flo, tries to sell Progressive Insurance to a bunch of empty couches. When we come back, there's a kickoff, maybe 3 or 4 seconds runs off the clock, and then we get the opportunity to go out to the grill to turn the brats or brush on some more barbeque sauce.
Now, if 3/4 or more of the kickoffs are just touchbacks, who's going to even bother to come back for them. Just get used to the fact that you won't miss anything for 7 or 8 minutes after a touchdown.
Dumb as dirt, this Competition Committee. Dumb as dirt.

So if you mess up on a directional kick it will be short or worse, it will go out of bounds. Either way the field will be much shorter for the offense. But it always seems like the league is against helping out the defense in any rule changes.

Leave it to a Redskin fan (@Chico 2.1) to devalue a message board. Buehler will still have value, but has to get better at FGs which sounds like a broken record since it is said every year. He will have competition for sure, if there is a training camp.

TBs will still have value if the other team has a ???Hester Type??? of returner. Take the ball out of one of their most dynamic players and it can only help the other team. Also, just like punts kickoffs will start to become more of an accuracy skill than power.

Since the NFL/owners apparently gave up pushing for 18 games, they can now try to reduce injuries?

Most kickers at that level can put it pretty close to anywhere they want it. I hate the wedge rule, nothing funner than hauling ass downfield to blow up a wedge.

Indoors yes but outside in lousy weather directional kicking is a crapshoot.

If they are more interested in making rules changes then they are to fixing their league, it really shows the average fan where their priorities lie. What good are rule changes if there's no season?

I heard some other crazy rule change they had on the table, about defenders having to pull up immediately before hitting the QB...
