08:06 AM ET 03.18 | Like many, Kendrick Perkins had no idea he was on the block. "I talked to Doc [Rivers] and he said he wasn't pushing it, that he was trying to stop it." Rivers said he did stop it. That was Perkins Deal No. 1, according to the coach. "At the time I talked to him, it was a different deal and I did put a stop to that one. But I also told him that something might still happen," Rivers said. Soon, Perkins Deal No. 2 came along and Rivers then had to say goodbye to a player he had, he said, come to regard as a son. "It was the most difficult thing I have had to do since I've been in the league," Rivers said. ... "It can be very hard to separate the basketball from the personal and this one was definitely that for me. ... We all decided to make the trade, but, for me, it hurt. It hurt a lot."

Because this is a business and they had to think about whats better for the team, and they believe this is a better move going forward......the team doing so well without perk was the reason he got booted....

i was totally against the move and ill never agree with it but after i put my emotions down i understand the move better..Pierce needed a back up in the worst way...Daniels went down and that caused major problems....green does it for the celtics and makes them younger.....I think perks injuries and the fact that the team played well without him signed his ticket out of here
they believe our team is best as long as the big 4 are in tact.........KG anchors the defense.......he is the heart of the team...they believe he can mold these new guys....they moved Jeff greens locker next to KG ...they want him to be molded by him.....

I was the exact same way. I hate perk not being here, but understand why he isnt. They have to look to improve while still building for the future. Perks injuries, and Pierce playing way to many minutes was catching up to him. Doc also is a big fan of KG at the five in the fourth quarters like it was when posey was here. Green is a good talent and hopefully will soak up as much as he can from KG and the others

yep and the fact that usually in the fourth perk didnt play...it was usually KG and Big baby closing games out........
I think they realized they had to get a back up for pierce........he is to big for us to have him playing that many minutes.....daniels was doing a great job before the injury ...just think his injury set all of this in motion

It was about contract concerns, in my view.
I don't think it was good because they are sacrificing a potential title this year over concerns about signing Perkins in the future.
You have a ready made title type of team with a small window that's closing rapidly.
They could have concerned themselves with Perkins after the season. With another title in tow it may have been further enticement for Kendrick to resign with Boston.
Unless they're aware of something lingering with Perkins physcially I do not think the deal was practical.

I still don't get how people are still saying the Celtics lack size. Last I checked, 6-10 is shorter than 7-0. Especially when said 7footer is pulling down rebounds in a way that the 6-10 guy didn't. Likewise, 6-9 (Green) is a lot taller than 5-9 (Robinson). There's also Troy Murphy (6-11), Sasha Pavlovic (6-8)... Where exactly are the Celtics lacking in size?

Except it doesn't deal with the potential matchup with the Lakers, which is the X factor they need against a team with that size... at least in my assessment.
Now, it's Kristic and Shaq to team with Garnett. Shaq is older and slower than ever, with injury problems of his own. Kristic has never been a defensive stalwart, but is decent offensively.
I think the matchups were more favorable with Perkins/Garnett/Shaq as opposed to Kristic/Garnett/Shaq.

For the future, yes, I can understand.
My point, they had a chance to win another title this year with Perk, and, I don't believe their chances are as good with Krisitc, even though Green was a good addition.
