08:45 AM ET 03.19 | Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said Friday that his experimentation with the lineup this spring would not develop into an outright competition for the leadoff spot between Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter. There remains understandable intrigue about the future of that spot in the batting order.

Why is this even an issue? Jeter has batted second the great majority of his career.

Gardner has better speed. But, if Jeter returns back to form with his bat, this would be a really tough decision.

It's not a real issue, of course...
.. Jeter has batted in various lineup spots.
But, fannation isn't concerned about the quility of the topics... as long as it's discussed:)

Why/
Does it really matter which of these guys bats leadoff if both are being productive?

Seems Gardner should be on base first to steal and get into scoring position for Jeter or anyone else for that matter.

If Girardi has any ba##s , he will bat Jeter in the bottom third of the order.

If Gardner is not as patient as Jeter or cannot hit in the clutch like Jeter, then no, I don't bat him leadoff.

Jeter, at his usual, can bat anywhere in the lineup.

The #2 hitters role is to get on base as well...
... for the 3-6 guys.
Although I know the #2 guys job is to also move the leadoff guy over, make contact, and allow the leadoff baserunner an opportunity to steal a base.

Who is their gardner and did he play high school ball? College ball? Nice break for the gardner.

jeter can't be the captain any more, unless he proves otherwise but his age and his bat are slowing down!!

Patient? Gardner is patient. He lead the league in pitches per AB. With his speed and stealing ability, he's an obvious lead-off choice. Plus, that gives another solid patient career .300 hitter--Jeter--more chances at RBIs.
