08:03 AM ET 03.22 | The Patriots may be willing to move the lower of their two first-round picks, and the Chargers have heard the chatter. Given Bill Belichick's propensity for draft dealings, this might hardly qualify as news. But this could be significant in regards to the Chargers because they have the ammunition to make moves, a history of partnering with Belichick and perhaps the desire to get another pick in the first round. The Chargers have amassed five picks among the first 89 spots, second only to the Patriots' six in the top 92. General manager A.J. Smith has been looking forward to this draft for a year, and he has often mentioned the flexibility having all those picks gives him.

If there's a rookie cap on salaries in the new CBA, 1st round picks will be much more valuable than ever before. I would think Belichick would want to keep both.

The Pats might make better use of their picks if they had the option to trade for players, not just different picks. This lockout probably hurts the Pats and other teams with a lot of picks this year, because they lose the flexibility of trading for players on draft day. On the other hand, teams that are short on picks but need players have no options at all.

If they were going to do that, they'd get better value trading with Cincy, Cleveland, Buffalo and so on. SD is likely to end up second in the AFC West. Figure out who will be the Carolina Panthers of 2011 and you could end up with the number 1 pick. And if there's a rookie salary cap, the value goes up even more.

If there's a lockout and the owners go with replacement players, then the first few games are a total crapshoot. If Carolina manages to sign Shane Falco, they could open up the season 3-0 and totally blow their chances for the #1 pick in 2012.
