Cooke: 'I need to change'

08:27 AM ET 03.22 | Now, it's up to his actions. There is only anecdotal evidence that controversial Penguins winger Matt Cooke has found enlightenment after his latest nasty hit -- an elbow to the head of New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh on Sunday that led the NHL to suspend him Monday through Round 1 of the Stanley Cup playoffs. ... Cooke, who has been suspended five times overall and four in three seasons with the Penguins, has defended himself in previous disciplinary hearings with NHL Hockey Operations. He didn't take that tact in Toronto yesterday. "In the past, I've been very defensive and have argued my point," he said. "The [Players Association] talks, they argue their point; and your agent gets on and defends you a lot. I realize and understand more so now than ever that I need to change. That was what I wanted my message to be."

Nice speech Matt. I'll still wait to see what you do when you go back on the ice before I believe any of it.

Yes, Matt, you do. We need you to PLAY, not sit on the bench or be a goon.

For some reason, "I did not have sexual relations with that women," comes to mind.

If Mario is smart he cuts his losses and Cooke has played his last game as a Pen. You can't speak out against the headshots in the press when you have one of the biggest offenders in the league on your team. And before anyone says anything about the Pens giving him a second chance to see if he's changed...bad idea..they've already given him about 4 chances. He's not the only dirty player in the league but he's probably the worst of the bunch. Pens fans are going to point at Gilles but the last suspension he got was stiffer than it should have been. Cooke isn't going to change because in reality this is the way he plays. I look for the Pens to trade him out West where they don't have to face him as much.

200K? Ouch. Maybe the headline should read:
Cooke: 'I need spare change'

1. Try to trade him.
2. If 1. fails, release him

Not believable in any sense. Say goodbye to him.

Sounds like he's talking to a parole board.

Nasty, but probably true. He'll be a good boy until, in the heat of the moment, he'll revert to his old self. Like ol' Bill.
I really hope that he quits the cheap shots and just plays hockey. He is a good player who is always hustling and making things happen. He's a great penalty killer too and at one time lead the league in short handed points. (I don't know if he still does.) You gotta wonder if he just can't help himself.

I think Cooke just got Talbot an extension offer. With him gone they will have a little bit of room to resign some of their 3/4 line forwards.

Newspapers don't ever give the whole story. What you didn't see with this article is that Matt was giving this speech while holding a kid in a headlock and punching him in the face.

Translation "please Mr Lemieux one more chance". I heard he has a NMC but cant seem to confirm that. Anyone?

LOL, banned for good for an elbow?
The Pens just saw a guy that should have been banned for good last night ala Bertuzzi.

Wondering when Mario will come out and condemn this. Or will the Pens announcers the next game go crazy on him like they did with Gillies?

Ha ha ha ha! That's hilarious! And ... we'd like to believe you, but ... can anyone really change a dog turd into filet mignon?

He did it was reported that after the Rangers game Lemieux told Cooke he was gone if he did something that stupid again.
