Punchless Kings playoff hopes take another hit

08:38 AM ET 03.23 | A rocky playoff road became somewhat bumpier for Los Angeles. Tests Tuesday found that right wing Justin Williams, among their most consistent and productive forwards, suffered a dislocated shoulder when he was checked into the boards during the third period of their 2-1 shootout victory over the Calgary Flames on Monday. Williams, the Kings' second-leading scorer with 57 points, chose to try three to four weeks' rehabilitation in hopes of avoiding season-ending surgery. If he can regain 80 percent of his strength he will be allowed to play while wearing a harness -- and risk dislocating it again. It's a shame for Williams, who rebounded from a series of freak injuries in recent seasons, and a challenge for the Kings, who have scored two goals in their last three games and have nine games to solidify a playoff spot in the ridiculously tight West standings.

People are getting hurt when hit into the boards?!? Remodel the arenas, get rid of these "boards"! WE have to seriously look at hitting if injuries could result. The game is a disgrace with all its inherent dangers and needs to be changed for the sake of the players. Protect them from themselves. Remove the stanchions and the glass and the boards and turn them into Nerf rinks. While you're at it, put everyone in bubble wrap and change the puck from vulcanized rubber to foam. Enough is enough with people getting hurt in this sport.

Seriously though, I feel for Williams. Freak injury after freak injury has a guy looking injury prone when he is seems to be just really, really unlucky. Best of luck to him and his recovery. Coburg boy, if I remember right.

What is the deal with the Kings? They miss these playoffs, there should be TWO members of the Murray family getting fired this off-season.

Weren't they everyone's dark-horse pick in the beginning of the year. It seems like the Kings are always ready to make that next jump, but never do. Then they go and mess things up by trading their first rounder for an average player.

I thank you. And agree on the Kings unis too. Though I wouldn't complain about the silver and black '90s versions either. I don't like the current edition or the purple/black combo at all.

HEY! WHOA! Lay off Burke, gol'darnit! Kessel is AMAZING! I'd make that trade 11/10 times. 30 goals man. He's elite! Burke is brilliant! The Leafs have 10 games left, meaning they are about to start a 26 game winning streak! Map out the Parade Route, baby, because the Blue and White Train is coming!

Another bowl please...

The really sad part goCanada is that Leaf Nation can't see your tongue planted firmly in you cheek. Right now they're vigorously nodding in agreement and high-fiving each other.

I forgot
how about:
missing the high fives and falling down the stairwells on the short bus?

March 23, 2011  10:58 AM ET

I wouldn't call the Kings "punchless." They sit in 5th place in the West. Besides, didn't they get Penner at the TDL from the Oilers? ;-)

The "punchless" label fits Anaheim, Dallas and the Flickers better. They all sit at 85 points.
