08:40 AM ET 03.27 | At some point after Opening Day we'll find out if the Red Sox and Adrian Gonzalez really did agree to a seven-year, $154-million extension at the time he was acquired from the Padres. Both parties have denied it but a lot of executives on other teams believe the Red Sox were trying to avoid a hit on their 2011 luxury tax.

They could also have just told Gonzlez they're going to extend him to give them some time to see how the Pujols negotiations progress.

At this point, I think Pujols will be a free agent at the end of this season.

Rumors up here in the Boston area are that a contract was agreed upon (in principal) at the time of the trade and that the delay in signing was/is strictly for the purpose of skirting the luxury tax implications for 2011.

Those Little Sisters of The Poor i.e., KC, Florida, Oakland, Pittsburgh, San Diego and Seattle must be crying there eyes out knowing that Theo and company have pulled a fast one on them and deprived them of their share of revenue sharing.

I think A-Gonz could get more than that on the open market

they never wouldve given up those prospects just to have him for a year then dump him. they have every intention of extending him. to trade away the prospects they did to rent agonz for a season would be a terrible decison on the business end. especially knowing he will be cheaper than pujols

Were these the same executives that said the Sox had signed Joe Blanton right after the Phillies signed Cliff Lee? Or that Cliff Lee was definately going to the Yankees? These writers really should check their sources before sending a story in. While I do agree that The Sox and Adrian did probably agree in principal to an extension, until that contract is approved by the MLB front office, it doesn't mean a whole lot, as both sides can change their minds.

Name me one owner, who wouldn't do the same?

Let Jeffrey Loria earn his own revenue.

Why should this be a surprise when the RedSox encouraged the entire team to ride the steroid carousel.

The Red Sox farm system is rated 18th according to Baseball America. May be a bit high. Just prospects. Who knows if they have any ML game. Not a bad trade for one year with the three they sent to SD.
The holdup , as stated at the time was this.."looking for language in the contract to protect them in case Gonzalez had problems with his surgically repaired right shoulder, much like they did with J.D. Drew. "

that's exatly what the owners from red sox and the padres have agree to complete the trade, red sox will not sign gonzo till after the season have started!!

March 27, 2011  03:47 PM ET

that's exatly what those two owners had agree on that trade for gonzalez and the only way was that if the red sox could sign this player to a seven years but only after the season have started, the reason it was very clear that the red sox will be able to avoid paying luxury tax on which the padres owner and gonzalez agree just to complete the trade!!

And they had their shot. I don't think they're going to be able to retain his services. So the question is, what's a reasonable guess as to where he lands? Red Sox/Yankees would be the popular reply. Both Adrain Gonzalez and Teixiera have outstanding defense at first, and Pujols probably would not want to DH. But at his age and with his slightly concerning history of injuries, maybe that's a good transition for a natural freakish slugger like him at age 32. He could always spell one of those guys at first once a week; Teixiera won't be a spring chicken in 2012, and Gonzalez might be more than happy to share 1B/DH duties with a guy like Pujols if it means a chance to win the whole thing. Maybe Pujols could be convinced to do it with a team that builds to win like the Yankees or the Red Sox.

Otherwise, teams that have a desperate need for a consistent power 1B like Tampa, the Dodgers, Pittsburgh, the Rockies, et al, who among them will hand out the most lucrative contract in MLB history? Could Minnesota do it, looking for something more than Cuddyer who hasn't hit 30-plus home runs but once in his career, and taking advantage of the tsunami of income pouring in from their new stadium deal? Pitcher's park, no doubt, but with Pujols, that doesn't make much of a difference. I think that's where he's most likely to land if the Yanks or Sox aren't a fit.
