Officials accuse Jeter of tax fraud

New York State tax officials say that the Yankee star Derek Jeter claimed he lived in Florida to avoid paying city and state income taxes for several years, when he was actually living in New York, according to documents filed last week with an administrative law judge. Jeter, one of the highest-paid players in baseball, filed nonresident income tax returns to New York State between 2001 and 2003, claiming that he lived primarily at his off-season home in Florida, which, unlike New York, has no state income tax. But officials at the State Division of Taxation and Finance argued that Jeter's primary residence during those years was in New York, where he owns an apartment in the Trump World Tower, near the United Nations, and has rented or owned other living space as well.

good luck on beating taxes...you like pinstripes or solids?

November 16, 2007  07:13 AM ET

Did he live in NY or Florida during the off season?

That's the only important question.

November 16, 2007  07:24 AM ET

HA!!! I love it. Your "Golden Boy" aint so golden now is he??? Fake **** Yankees fans!

November 16, 2007  07:25 AM ET

According to reports in the paper this AM "there is no suggestion of criminal wrongdoing."
But come on Derek, how much do you make and how much are you going to pay your lawyers to deal with this? Pay the freaking taxes.

November 16, 2007  07:27 AM ET

Write them a check.End of story. Next....

November 16, 2007  07:41 AM ET

Not like he can't afford it. Come on now!

November 16, 2007  08:28 AM ET

OOOOOOOOOOOPS!!!
With the resigning of A-Nob, much like Sodom and Gomorrah, Yankee nation is crashing and burning before our eyes.

November 16, 2007  08:33 AM ET

not surprising at all, he just puts up that little smile and sells his own cologne and no one suspects a thing

November 16, 2007  08:45 AM ET

The Yankees haters on this site are in need of some serious therapy. If the man owes back taxes, I think he has the funds to pay them. You are all pretty pathetic. Your jealousy of the greatest team in the history of world sports is completely evident. GET A FRUCKIN' LIFE, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

November 16, 2007  08:50 AM ET

Living in the past, Bronx Bomber in Jpn. There are 7 year olds living in New York right now wondering if the Yankees will ever win a championship in their lifetime! :-)

November 16, 2007  08:57 AM ET

Don't type mad now...Take some deep cleansing breaths...LOL

November 16, 2007  08:59 AM ET

Hey Bronx Bomber.......The article didn't mention anything about the Red Sox!?!

November 16, 2007  09:01 AM ET

Bronx Bomber.......It was tax evasion...not just owing back taxes.

November 16, 2007  09:02 AM ET

Now that's cheating.

November 16, 2007  09:02 AM ET

I never live in the past and I don't know where you get your information from,jscout33 but I don't worry about what a seven-year-old is thinking. I'm worried about them getting another quality starter and a good fielding first baseman with a decent bat. Look at the last 1/2 of the past season and you'll see they had a great record even with mediocre pitching. Pitching wins in the playoffs and that's been their achilles heel for the past few years.

November 16, 2007  09:07 AM ET

Hahaha.

Mr. Perfect he is not. But who cares.

November 16, 2007  09:09 AM ET

Look, I don't really care whether he owes taxes or not. I just hate how anything that involves the Yankees bring out the haters on this and other sites. Besides, the Feds have to win the case first. They'll probably figure out something and settle it before it goes to a judge and all the Yankees haters will scream that he got away with murder.

November 16, 2007  09:10 AM ET

That should say "brings".

November 16, 2007  09:11 AM ET

I'll bet anyone he is just one of many players who do this. Heck, my boss lives and works in Virginia, but has florida plates on his cars and has a Florida address, so he doesn't have to pay Va state taxes. It happens all the time.

This is such a non-story (and I'm not a yankee fan). Do you really think DJ sits at his dinner table doing his OWN taxes each April? Come on, it's his accountant that will take the fall for this.
