Will any team touch Bonds?

If you do want a conclusion you can jump to, it is that Barry Bonds is retired from baseball, whether he likes it or not. The five-count indictment blows so many holes in Bonds' desirability to other teams that it is unfathomable that another team would be willing to sign him, either in December, March, June or ever. Never mind whether he is still a salable commodity to the average fan - no team is going to sign someone who might have to take a few weeks off during the middle of the 2008 season to go on trial. Even the most benign viewing of the events of today undercuts Bonds' ability to make himself attractive to another team.

Why would they touch him?? When "the man" is after you, he's gonna get you. Damn shame.

November 16, 2007  08:09 AM ET

Go back to Pittsburgh and pretend you don't remember playing for them.

November 16, 2007  08:24 AM ET

The "damn shame" Jerzy Man is that this dirtbag injected his way into the record books in the first place. "The Man" didn't shove steroids down this idiot's throat. Bonds is a tumor on MLB's butt.

Its not like the inditement will go anywhere, they had to release his boy from prison who was the only real link to it. If they had strong enough evidence without him they wouldn't of left him in prison for that long, he is going to end up sueing everyone now that there was no real proof of purgery. Bonds will play somewhere if he wants to. Because some owner wil deem the money he will bring in will far out weigh what it costs

November 16, 2007  08:35 AM ET

Oh, but everyone else that did roids gets a pass huh? You don't think that's a bit strange?? Why persecute this man in particular? There was a thing called the "steroid era" that means it was definately more than one person involved. And because baseball turned a blind eye to this, how is the player to blame?? You didn't hear all this outrage when Mark McGuire was breaking the single season record. Why now? It's a witch hunt...

November 16, 2007  08:43 AM ET

They are prosecuting him for two reasons:
1) Because he lied to a Grand Jury and obstructed an ivestigation into an illegal trafficking ring.
2) The government is making a statement. It doesn't matter who you are we can and we will get you if you **** with us.

November 16, 2007  09:00 AM ET

supposedly the Sing Sing Songbirds are looking for a cleanup hitter

November 16, 2007  09:16 AM ET

You persecute him because he lied under oath. He had immunity, all he had to do was tell the truth and his arrogance would not let him, so he lied. It was more important for him to lie and try to continue to get away with what he did. THAT is why he is being punished, not because the man is after him, which is completely ridiculoous. There will be others who will go down as well, but none of them had the chance golden boy Barry did, which was to simply tell the truth. Fact is he was one of the greatest players ever and was shoe in for the HOF, he did not need to cheat, but his ego got the best of him, like so many other starts and he will forever now be known as a nothing and you can kiss the HOF goodbye now too....

November 16, 2007  09:35 AM ET

Yanno, I would like to see him get 300 AB's in a BoSox uni so actually him buzzing out to handle a trial nest summer might work out fine.....

November 16, 2007  09:39 AM ET

Maddux has it all in his post. You can't lie under oath to a grand jury and expect to get away with it. It has nothing to do with government being out to get Barry. I guess there is the Scooter Libby exception... Unless you are buddies with the Presidents' goons and you are trying to ruin CIA career, then you can be prosecuted for perjury and obstruction of justice.

November 16, 2007  09:43 AM ET

Yeah i know a team that would "touch" him. It's called the "F*u*d*g*e Packers" of San Fran.

November 16, 2007  09:53 AM ET

MAddux: NO! He obstructed justice! Big freaking difference. This is a lot more than lying to save his own butt- though in essence he was trying to cover that big rump- he actually inhibited the Feds in following an illegal drug trafficking consortium.

November 16, 2007  09:58 AM ET

Only if Bonds makes Bond

November 16, 2007  10:19 AM ET

B*nds is not being prosecuted for doing steroids.
Obstruction of Justice, look it up before you start comparing steroids users and their penalties.
The issue is obstruction, not the steroids.
Though from a baseball perspective it might be bigger news that the Gov can prove he knowingly took. *,*,*.

Bonds is done. Done. Done.

He will not get into the Hall either. If Pete Rose isn't in for betting, Barry will never get in for being proven guilty for illegal strength enhancement. Cheating is cheating.

November 16, 2007  11:14 AM ET

On this subject
no
Not because of yesterday, because his ego would require a salary no GM would be willing to pay.
He was done before yesterday, now you can stick a fork in him.

November 16, 2007  11:15 AM ET

Maybe he can get a prison cell next to Vick?

November 16, 2007  11:19 AM ET

Okay, ANYONE that throws the RACE excuse on this one is a complete and TOTAL moron.....

Bonds cheated...then lied about cheating...and is now HOPEFULLY going to have to face some consequences.....

November 16, 2007  11:34 AM ET

bonds' head may not fit in the cell
