Ex-commish claims 'massive cheating'
Barry Bonds might never get booed again. That is, if his playing career is over in the wake of Thursday's indictment. Major League Baseball, however, must carry on - under a cloud that's darker than ever now that its home run king faces charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. "There has been massive cheating by perhaps hundreds of players over the last 10 or 15 years. It's the biggest scandal in the history of baseball, and Barry Bonds is just one piece of it," former Commissioner Fay Vincent said in a Thursday phone interview. "The problem has been enormous, and I think the Mitchell report will be devastating and a substantial blow."

Hopefully I never have to ever hear the phrase "he never tested positive" again.

Commissioner and owners fail to do anything about this stuff. IF they had got tough on it years ago, it wouldn't have grown to the 800lb gorilla it is today.
baseball has nobody but baseball to blame for this mess.

Erase his record now? Ban him? Can you read?
Why are you going to 'ban' Bonds when its obvious this has been a rampant problem involving dozens if not hundreds of players? I despise the guy - but what you're talking about is unfair.

Yes everybody who argued he never tested positive was wrong from the start. It's always been out there that he tested positive, what wasn't known was if he knew what he was taking. The grand jury has known for years that he tested positive. He played that damn "I never knowingly took steroids" card way too long. He just tried to make people believe he was letting Anderson inject him with whatever he wanted. It was all a ploy to delay the indictment. Just like Anderson sitting in prison for a year. Why would he sit in prison for one year if he had nothing to hide? Would you give up a year of your life in prison? I know Bud is pissed they didn't do this earlier like they said they would because he would have suspended Bonds right away and there would have been no record. Now what does Bud do?

pw is soooooo right. The players are facing all the scrutiny that the OWNERS and LEAGUE OFFICE should be facing. Unlike the NFL, which banned steroids many years ago (and tested players every season), MLB ignored the problems, and ALLOWED it to get worse. Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, Jose Conseco....they broke NO RULES of MLB. If the NFL had no steroid policy, 90% of all the guys would be on the juice, and you know it. Going after these players is such BS....

Right.
Nobody is going after the commissioner who makes $14 million a year. Nobody is going after the owners who made millions, or billions, off the backs of home run hitting juicebags who are now castigated by the media.
This makes me sick. I despise Barry Bonds and I'm 99% sure he knowingly cheated. But regardless, people are missing the point and not going after the real targets.

It's time for the union to step up, too. It's the time to clean up and correct what went down wrong. Got to make it clear to all levels, college and even little league.

Thank God its finally over the speculation that he was innocent was absurd. Ban his record is up for debate. But Prison is a definite. Bye Bye Bonds Goin going Gone.

If you erase his records, you might as well erase the fact that baseball was played at all during the late 80's and 90's.
The outrage around Bonds is misplaced by the many hysterical fans and media figures who want to hang him for the sins of hundreds of players. Put down your torches and pitchforks and go home. Flaying Bonds is going to solve the problem or punish the guilty.
Do you know why a scapegoat is so named? Because it was believed that if you sacrificed a single animal, it would absolve you of all your sins. Guess what? It doesn't work.

If it is rampant in MLB imagine what it is like in the NFL. We all heard the rumors, now we know they are true. They need to offer an amnesty and work as hard as they can to institute new and stricter penalties and finance new testing technology. Only by really making an effort are they going to get out from under this.

So why didn't MLB start this investigation years ago? If Vincent and his cronies were privy to such massive cheating, why did they allow it to get so out of hand and not at least come up with banning the substances years ago? Gate revenues, my friends. These owners are worse than the players. As long as their wallets were fat, mum was the word. Now they set themselves on a pedestal? Excuse me, while I vomit on my keyboard...
