08:02 AM ET 03.29 | While many of his numbers were modest, Matt Cassel's bonus of more than $7 million may be riding on his 27 TDs against seven interceptions. Eventually, the Chiefs will decide whether they want to pay that bonus amount to pick up the option on Cassel's contract. By all indications, they will make this move, even if it does involve some risk. And their motivation will come largely from the two areas in which Cassel displayed the greatest aptitude in 2010. "He did a lot of good things last year, but what we're excited about is, taking [other] statistics out of it, the interception-to-touchdown ratio was off the charts," coach Todd Haley told me during a recent interview on Sirius NFL radio. "I don't know that any of us expected that it could go that way or that it could go that exact way again. But what I'm excited about is I believe there's a lot of room for growth for Matt."

That's not good.

He's overpriced but he's better than a lot of the bums that start and/or hold clipboards that were high draft picks.

Herm's head will explode, there's a Chiefs thread.

March 29, 2011  08:15 AM ET

Would they seriously consider not picking this up? Look, they've got an NFL starter here. He took them to the playoffs. How many teams are out there with no real quarterbacks at all?

Sellers' market. They're over a barrel, but it's the contract both sides signed a couple of years back. The Chiefs should consider themselves lucky that they can do this with the stroke of a pen. Where else can they go, Hattiesburg?

...

Exactly! Who the hell else are they going to plug in and maintain any level of continuity?

KC must be thinking of joining the Andrew Luck sweepstakes next year.

March 29, 2011  08:21 AM ET

What about Brodie Croyle??

It's like walking into a bar in Boston and saying "Bill Buckner."

Hopefully he grows to JaMarkus proportions with all that McDonald's money jingling in his pocket.

March 29, 2011  09:00 AM ET

He'll get his money. No logical reason for him not to.

March 29, 2011  09:14 AM ET

He played well last year and you won your division...you play in the AFC West and you have a startable QB ....I would hold onto him

Matt Cassel - the most dangerous QB in the NFL

I agree. IMO he is just as good as most of the NFL starters.

You should trade for him...

March 29, 2011  09:40 AM ET

If they don't want to pay there are at least 10 teams out there willing to. Go ahead KC..take a chance. You're fans will be thrilled to see him with another teaml after going thru a lockout!

March 29, 2011  09:42 AM ET

I can't see how they wouldn't sign him, he's taken them to the playoffs. Unless the Chiefs want to join the Kolb, Palmer, or lure back ***** mess, there are few proven QBs available this year. Hey its only $7 M, not like its a lot of money.

If you draft a quarterback in the first round, you're going to end up in that ballpark. And that's for an unproven guy who really should spend Sunday afternoons with a clipboard learning the position.

Of course, we might get a rookie salary cap.

So Cassel is about to get a Huge bonus eruptus? did we really need to know this?

he deserves it...cassel is an elite qb, and should be paid as one...manning, brady, cassel, brees and vick...in that order are the top qbs in football

0 playoff wins doesn't make him an elite QB, Herm.
