08:16 AM ET 03.30 | On the same day news broke that a big-name current Mets player might open the season on the DL, a former Mets announcer gave his two cents on the team. Tim McCarver thinks there's only one way for Mets ownership to extricate themselves from the financial squeeze they are in. "It's agonizing. I personally feel the Wilpons have to sell the ballclub," McCarver, Fox's No. 1 baseball analyst, said Tuesday during a conference call. "I don't see how they can escape by selling a minority position, particularly when they don't allow any control." McCarver, who worked behind a Mets TV microphone for 15 seasons (1983-1998), said the financial plight of the team is something that will weigh on the players until it's resolved. "It's deplorable, I would not want to be a player on the Mets right now," McCarver said.

Jst sayin.....What exactly does bay hurting his oblique or getting a concussion, or santana needing surgery or them waving perez/castillo or beltran having old lady knees have to do with the wilpons?Yes they were snookered by madoff, yes they might have to purge the team, but what has madoff done to this particular squad at this point? Its not like they have Pittsburghs payroll

All fair points. I suppose the issue now is with Madoff and the plight of the Wilpons there's no hope for the immediate future. But you're right, the current state of the team was created before the Madoff mess.

are all of them still getting paid? yes...so 'the financial plight of the team' is really not an issue for them.

Fox hasn't even broadcast a game yet and i'm already sick of McCarver.

Someone needs to go Neon Deion on McCarver again.

I have a lot of friends who are Mets fans and they all agree with this. You guys are right in saying that it is not the Wilpons fault they have the roster they have now, but it will be their fault when they stop having money to build a roster. This lawsuit is going to go a long ways, and their baseball team will suffer just like everything else they own.

McCarver is a worse broadcaster than Joe Morgan ... and that's saying something because Joe stinks.

Joe Morgan's gone this year! Hallelujah!

In a sport filled with underworld owners, these guys are downright criminals. MLB must do whatever it can to ease them completely out of ownership for the good of the game.

Agreed that the financial issue has nothing to do with the current on field problems. But where it does affect the team is they can't take on more payroll and can't make long term plans regarding talent they want to keep or free agents they want to go after. It's an anchor that keep them from moving forward.

Well, this is the second time ther Wilpons were involved in a Ponzi scheme. And amazingly, both times, despite a constant and amazing return rate, decided to pull thier money out ... just before the whole thing collapsed. Hmmmmmm .... So do I think they are innocent dupes? Nope. Keep in mind - they didn't lose thier money - they made out like bandits. They're getting sued by the people who owned the money Madoff gave them.

McCarver, Fox's No. 1 baseball analyst......

It's official, Fox is screwed.

Well, hold off on that, the Wilpons hired Minaya and Mauel and signed off on all trades and free agent signings. They most certainly are responsible for the make-up of the team.

I guess we should be lucky they never graced the same booth. Suicide rate would've spiked on Saturdays/Sundays.

They also went on radio and blatantly lied to their fans that the Madoff incidenct would have no impact on the team and that they would continue to spend like before to put the best roster out on the field.
